Jaguar Diesel???

I was flipping through December's Car and Driver and saw this on page 45. Evidently Jag is considering putting a Ford 2.7L V-6 diesel into its R-D6. Top speed is 155mph and 0-60 is a svelte six seconds. Anyone familiar with this Ford powerplant?

The folks over at biodiesel.org think highly of Euro Ford diesels, but

I'd only believe those performance figures if they're talking about kilometers rather than miles per hour.

slowmoe 11-17-2003 09:35 PM

I double checked... mph it is

Must be an European Ford diesel.

I think,but I'm not sure,that in the US,Ford
only has the V8 diesel for their pick up trucks.

You're correct there. In fact, in a fit of irony, Ford doesn't build the V-8 diesel; the engine's built by International-Harvester.

I have been telling people that diesels are the future. It's a proven technology, diesel is cheaper to refine, can be found everywhere and provides incredible fuel economy. You also don't have to any fuel cells or special safety features to make a car a diesel, unlike a hydrogen/electric car. Few people know that Audi and BMW make diesels for the rest of the world. There was also talk of a Ford Focus diesel.

AND, THEY CAN BURN WASTE GREASE TOO!!!!!

I honestly do not understand why every vehicle on the road isn't a diesel.

mb123mercedes 11-18-2003 08:14 PM

I would go one further and say.

Diesel,electric hybrid???

If I'm not mistaken they are available in Europe
already.
No???
I could be wrong!

If the Toyota Prius gets 70 mpg.can you imagine
a MB smart with a diesel/electric engine,100 mpg?

Louis.

What about a Mini diesel.

I've been asking myself that question for years now. I for one refuse to own anything that isn't diesel-powered (except a 426 Hemi :D); in fact, that was the driving force behind me getting an M-B in the first place. I've been all-diesel for 5 of the 6 years that I've had my license, and have never had second thoughts.

Diesels are cleaner than gas engines (contrary to popular belief), last longer, are more efficient by far, and can be maintained completely with renewable resources (including synthetic oil and various reproduce-able sources of fuel). I'm surprised that the tree-huggers aren't jumping all over this opportunity...but I guess that would require rational thought, huh? ;)

the tree huggers only see smoke coming from the exhaust....they dont have the ability to see beyond that....thier rationality: if it smokes, its killin the earth

The V6 is a European Ford designed engine. It'll appear in the Jaguar next year I think - LandRover thereafter. Ford has an engine sharing partnership with PSA. So, for example, the current Ford Fiesta takes PSA engines - so don't be surprised to see the engine in something French! Ford was using PSA engine back in the mid 80's - a 2.3L engine that went into Sierra.

Actually the first generation Prius gets around 50 mpg. The second generation, around 60 miles to the gallon. A diesel/electric hybrid would simply be the cats meow.

They've got his too..... MB 3 cyl 6 spd diesel known as 'smart car' that gets better than 60mpg. Its basically a little bubble pod 2 seater with luggage/hatch space for groceries. Saw one on ebay Mercedes "Other Cars" category awhile back..... for sale in Netherlands with shipping available to USA.

ForcedInduction 11-24-2003 08:42 AM

It's no S-class but it might be a nice alternative for those who have the new car syndrome and can't afford a E320CDI
