front sway bar bushings
 

I get a clunk when turning hte steering wheel side to side. Soimetimes I get same going over a speed bump, especailly if the wheels are slightly turned.
I hear this is indicative of bad front sway bar bushings.

What is involved in changing them? on my bmw its easy, but I cant tell as readily on the MB.

Shouldn't be too bad. Not sure of the W123 because I've not changed any, but on the W115 there is a bolt with a spacer and four rubber buffers between the end of the bar and and the control arm, then two large bushings in brackets along the front of the frame. One the W115 one of those is hidden in a box section and is a PITA, the others are easy. May have to pry up on the bottom of the long bolt to get thread exposed at the top.

On the control arm to sway bar mount, don't run the nuts down past where a thread or two shows on the top (if you have the long bolt). Lock the nuts together if you get two, or leave the equivalent length of thread showing above the nut if you get a locker nut -- you can run the nut down another inch or so, but this will remove all the cushioning from the link, makes noise and harshens ride without adding much in the way of desirable characteristics.

On the W108, one has to use a jack and the weight of the car to force the frame bushings in, they are a VERY tight fit on both the bracket and the swaybar (bar is at least an inch, hole in bushing is about 5/8").
