The $25k 1985 300D
I love my 85 300D, I would never sell it. But looking through the STAR today, I found a guy who is selling his with well over 200k on the clock for $25,000! That's right, 25 large! He says to call to hear all 25 reasons to buy the car... I don't care what the car looks like, maybe if it had 25,000 miles, but with over 200? What do all you guys think... Most of you get bent when you see a 240D with 15k on eBay go in the low teens, mid twenties should start a riot! LOL...

He is either just feeling the market, or crazy. Call him it might be interesting to listen to him, could be fun. Then offer him 2,500.
|
I'd rather buy one with 200k instead of 25k.

well then randall, that would make ours worth ooh at least $15k wouldn't you say:p
and we can give 25 reasons why we would not sell ,hehe:D seriously, that sounds insane! |
He might be nuts or he did a complete restoration and is trying to see if he can sell it.
I have been pondering what someone would pay for a showroom condition, rebuilt from the ground up MB diesel. New engine and accessories, trans, suspension, interior, paint chrome etc with a 5 year 50,000 mile warranty. Might be a business opportunity in this world of plastic SUV junk. Knowing the price of everything, the value of nothing
...thing is, a diesel W123 in great driving condition would more easily be worth $25k than some of the new stuff they want that much for.
...Duesenbergs which went for a few hundred dollars on late '40s used car lots now edge up near the million $ mark. They're still the same lovely machines, although when they were available cheaply owners would tend to relax and enjoy them more. ...the fact that I recently got a near-cherry stick '81 240D for $2,400 (plus another $1,200 to get it through state inspection) is just another reason to appreciate these rational and lovely cars. Philosopher Jeremey Bentham had a "calculus of pleasure" where the actual money cost of an object or experience rated rather low...the fact that I can get most of the cars I aspire to own (VW bugs, W123 diesels, lovely '41-'47 Packard Clippers) for $5k or under just adds to the enjoyment. |
He can ask anything he wants but the selling price, if he does sell it, will be determined by the buyer.

The guy wanting $25k is on crack unless it had 25k miles, fully serviced, always garaged, and never seen snow. At that point he might get a buyer if advertised in the DuPont Registry (probably at high teens, though). Just my $0.02... :D :D |
mercedesshowroom
speaking of MS. I was on the cars.com website and found an 87 190DT for sale by a guy in the FTL area. It sounded like a great car (1 senior owner, low miles (93K, I think), all records, etc...) So I decided to call about it on a Sunday afternoon. I was one day too late, the gentleman told me that he sold it to a Mercedes dealership in FTL the day before. He told me that he got his asking price without any problem (he was asking like $4950 or somewhere around there). Now, eariler that day (the day I called about the car), I was on AutoTrader.com and saw MercedesShowroom has a 87 190DT (remarkably similar to the one for sale). Knowing this, I got curious and asked the seller if he sold it to MercedesShowroom. He replied "yes! I did" how did you know? I told him about the ad they had on AutoTrader.com for $13,900.:eek:
BTW: They've had this 87 Cabernet 300D on their lot for what seems like 3 years now. Wonder why?? |
And at one point I actually ended up thinking that paying $2500 was too much for my '85 300DT with 212K and all of the service records from new....not anymore!:D
It's running great now and without any more mystery engine noises. They went away as mysteriously as they started. |
Wow. Another one that "got away". I've been eyeing that 87 300D they have, it's down to $10,900 asking price. Biggest killer for me is the price, and that it spent most of its life in Maryland (possible rust). Last time I talked to them (this summer), when asking $12,900, they said $9900 was the least they'd take. I'll wait for next summer I guess, I bet it won't be sold yet. Now if it had been 1 owner, full records, and from FL or CA since '87... mmm....
;) |
Maryland is not a rusty state
|
it isnt.? Man the Old Datusn diesel I have that lived its whole life in Maryland/DC area sure dissagrees. Its a Nasty rust bucket. Everything in the area I saw looked like rust buckets.
