Diesel purged my E300TD
I did the diesel purge today on my 1998 E300Td. No problems encountered. When I asked on this fourum if I should pour the DP in the old filter or the new one, I did not get a consensus of opinion, so I changed out the pre-filter and I put half of the DP in the old filter, and ran it out. Then I changed filters and put the other half of the can in the new filter. I had to crank it a few times,to get it to start after the pre-filter change, but it fired right up with the new filter fill up.
This is the first filter change since I aquired the car with 30k miles on it. My mileage had dropped a little (27 around town)so we will see if the Diesel Purge helps.

A '98 E300TD?
I thought that the last diesel wagon MB brought into the US was in '87. Is that what you have? A diesel wagon made in '98? Where did you get that?

I get that because of Mercedes confusing designations. This E300TD stands for turbo diesel which they offered in 1998 and 1999.
If any one has any questions on the fuel filter/Diesel Purge DIY job, I would be glad to try and offer any help. The worry about doing the job right was much worse than the job itself.

TXBill is correct. To get the most benefit out of the DP, you need to run the car on 100% DP.
This may shed some light on the subject. http://www.mindspring.com/~houlihan/merc/purge.htm |

I believe you fellows are correct. The problem I had was that after posting twice on this forum an how to do the Diesel Purge on a 1998-99 E300TD, I did not get any procedural feed back. The 98-99 set up is a lot different and not being sure how to do the purge properly, I went ahead and did if just filling the filter twice.

ready-ronnie,
You did about as good as you can without taking the intake manifold off on an E300D TurboDiesel of the W210 flavor. I know the stuff is already diluted with Diesel the way it comes out of the can, and it likely would be more effective to use it straight out of the can rather than further dilute it the way you did, but there are limits. I don't think you got any replies from owners of these vehicles because none of them have tried, just because the procedure would be such a pain in the rear. Good luck, Jim

BTW - I think the more accurate nomenclature for the 98/99 models is E300D-T. Note the "T" comes after the "D", not before. When listed before it indicates "Touring", which means station wagon. Also note the trunk emblem is "E300" and then separately "Turbodiesel", but not "TD" or "D-T".

But if you think about it, by 1998 MB stopped using the T to denote Touring as well. The E320 wagon's hatch simply says "E320." So the T is now meaningless.
ready-ronnie, I'm sorry we couldn't help you do the diesel purge, and that all you got here was flak over the cars' designation. So anyway, does it run any better since you did it? Was there a specific problem you were trying to address?

I stand corrected on the use of E300TD. Mercedes calls it a E300 turbodiesel in the owners manual and on service orders it is called a E300DT.
Concerning the purge: 1. Someone did suggest on the posts that using the DP in the fuel filter was probally the best way to go, considering the problems you would have, using the jar system, on the 98-99 fuel system set-up. 2. Maybe the engine ran a little smoother. You like to think so. 3. I will be checking the milage to see if there is any improvement. Like I stated, The filter had not been changed since I purchased the car with 32K on it and it now has 82k. Thank for the input. Isn't this a great forum!!!!!!

TX Bill, welcome back! I hadn't realized that you had returned. Now, if Tcane was back and Larry Bible had a faster connection, it would be the "Grand Masters" once again.

Regardless of what is more accurate, ours is always refered to as a 1987 300TDT.
edit: suffered a turbo recall, and 2 years ago a bottom-end failure. As well as a transmission failure. We learned that the 1987 diesel engine is also the most expensive. Last edited by ///alpinepower; 12-11-2003 at 10:32 PM. |
