how often should I change my oil if I used Dlvac-1 synthetic?

I want to put this in my car, especially for winter and to clean out my engine. I don't want to turn this inot a debate over which oils work, etc. Just your opinion. I especially want those who use the stuff to chime in.
Thanks
David

One of the list members has said sometimes that these older IDI engines make too much soot to be able to extend safely beyond 3000mi.

I think delvac 1 can suspend up to 4% soot, bt I know from UOA on my 83 300D, I get around 1% after 3000 mi. So do the math...

BUT, I do notice, using a 50/50 D1/D1300s mix, much after 4000 mi on the oil, the MPGs are still the same, but I can tell (I think) that the ol has thickened up a bit, because the car just doesnt feel quite so peppy...

the previous owner of my 300d was changing oil every 20 000mi and filter every 10 000mi

with no problems at all....actually he had a problem with compression on cylinder #5 since he started using this oil it has cleaned up the motor that well that the compression is going back up on all five cylinders

Was there a valve adjustment or some other repair I have never heard of compression going back up because of using a different oil? What were the readings before and after?

the piston rings have cleaned up by using this oil...all of the adjustments were done based on regular maintenace...adjusting valves etc

I have heard of that happening... Oil analysis/discussion websites talk of this being somewhat common

I use Delvac1 in both cars. Oil analysis says it's still good for thousands more when I change oil and filter at 10K on both. Both cars see 90%+ highway driving.

I use amsoil in all my cars and change the oil at around 4000 miles on the first oil change after the car has had dino oil. This helps clean out the gunk the was left by the dino oil. Then I change the oil filter every 3000 mile after that, i have noticed that after running 20 to 30 thousand miles that the compression and oil comsumtion is a lot better. I usually change the oil at 25000 to 30000 miles. I use to send in samples of oil to be checked, but now have a sence of when the filter change will do the job of cleaning up the oil or not. Brightness of oil and paper test of oil.
A little dab of oil on a paper towel after it drys looking at it campared to the last time you sampled will tell how your filter is doing on oil cleanup. After sending in samples and doing this for a while you can tell how your oil is doing.

Delvac

When you're ready to change the filter (or oil) use this: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/
They're not too far from you and you get results in 2 to 3 days max after dropping the sample off.

Delvac-1 can suspend about 4% soot. However you probably want to change the oil when the soot load gets near 3%. And it has been suggested that cars with hydraulic lifters (all OM60x diesels) should not use oil with more than 2% soot present, regardless if the oil *can* suspend more than 2%. So you'll want to do at least one oil analysis to determine the approximate soot generation of YOUR engine - each one is different. For a ballpark number w/o analysis, I personally think changing before 5kmi is a waste of money and oil (can I have what you drain out?), and 7.5k is probably a nice conservative number. I wouldn't go past 10kmi without analysis.

Don't bother changing the filter more often either... it doesn't trap soot anyway, and MB sized it at something like 300% (4 times) more capacity than necessary. If your filter is getting plugged before the oil is drained (whether that's 10, 20, or 30kmi) you have serious problems! It won't hurt to change it more often, you're just wasting about $10-$15 per filter change (you need to add about 1 quart of oil when you replace the filter alone).

FWIW, my OM603 diesels produce about 1% soot per 10kmi but I change them at 10k anyway, because that's 18-24 months of driving for me. My '84 produces about 2% soot in 10kmi. I feed that car Mobil-1 15W-50, which can only suspend about 2%, so I change that oil every 7.5k or so (would be 10k with Delvac-1). YSMV (Your Soot May Vary.)

You mean where can you get Delvac-1? In the USA, about the only place I know of is a Mobil distributor, or a CAT (Caterpillar) dealer. The CAT Synthetic DEO is really just Delvac with a CAT label. Problem is the CAT stuff costs more, at least at my local CAT dealer. In Canada (eh), I hear Delvac-1 is a lot easier to find. Don't know why.

truckstops selectively have it, some do som dont. Will run about 28-30 dollars per gallon. Canadian wal-marts have it all the time, for CAD 28.88/gal. Thats a great deal.

Mobil distributors are not to be feared, they can get you some great deals on it, and if there is one nearby, the no shipping bit makes it good...

Dont buy this oil if youre afraid of spending a lot of money on oil... trust me, you will...
