Guys......

I'm sorry if i caused a big stir on your forum.

As I mentioned on my first 'hello' post. I joined this forum for a reason. Namely, I want to work on my car MYSELF. The info i have gotten from all you guys so far has been superb. I thought to re-register my profile in a more masculine way but what does it really matter. I'm here to get and give tech info just like you are. The profile stays.

If you disagree with my presence here and see a thread with my name on it, please do not read the thread and move on. It's not that hard to do.

About the pictures. I thought it might be fun to post one. I admit I got carried away with all the attention. My mistake. No more pictures.

Jen

Welcome. This is by far the best place on the web to learn about these old diesels, and a fun place to hang out as well.

hey, this forum is full of total dorks, so dont think that its your fault that it got out of control. were always happy to have a new member, and please dont be scared off.

besides, if you really wanted attention from guys who think theyre really cool and suave, you would have gone to tech help! im sure everyone else will figure that out and theyll eventually get over the fact that theyre actually talking to a girl for once!

i really hope it wont be necessary for you to change your ID, please know that youre welcome here.

I know the vast majority of us welcome you to the forum and hope you will stay.

Plenty of us post pictures of ourselves and our cars. There are whole message threads dedicated to one or the other or both. So there's nothing wrong at all with picture posting. If someone doesn't like to look at a female ShopForum member then like you say, they know your screen name and can avoid your posts. There might even be an "ignore ID" feature here on the board, I'm not sure because I've never required it.

I think the folks that had anything (slightly) critical to say were not really commenting on you - they were just kidding the rest of us.

So for my opinion I'd say enjoy yourself here and enjoy the attention. It's obvious from looking at the Open Discussion section that plenty of people here need some attention.

Ok..., I guess I'll have to read this alleged post and come to a conclusion on the matter of members going bonkers and acting like a bunch of crazed maniacs.

Then again...., I can come to THAT conclusion NOW!

It's not like TXBill put up a sign on the treehouse that said 'nO gUrLz aLouD." Anyway, we can always stand a good 'stirrin' now and then. Arguing the various merits of Rotella T, Delvac and Delo 400 (and cleaning the tiny little holes in precombustion chambers) becomes tedious after a while.

So, I'd like to think that once we get past the utter astonishment that a person of the opposite sex owns/is interested in working on/will talk with me about a Mercedes diesel, we can move on to do what we do best: engender confidence in the individual's ability to solve MBZ diesel (or for that fact, any sort of machinery) related problems.

It's the guys that are the problem. I think girls on the forum are great. My 9 yr old daughter already helps me with oil changes and I told her that the next time she can do it herself while I watch. It is a terrible shame that our culture does not regularly teach women how to be mechanics. Women then end up spending more on their cars than is necessary and it puts them in a dependency relationship with men.
While there are no hermaphrodites on the forum to my knowledge, there is also a wider range of genders than just 'guy' 'girl'. Go to the Open Forum for threads on those topics.

A pretty girl almost always causes a stir -- I'd take that as a compliment.

I'm personally tickled to find a "girl" willing to work on her car. Not like I've never seen anything like that, as my Dad's cousin ran a bar-chuck lathe at Greenlee Tool for 30 years (she got transferred to the mail room after her third heart attack!). Much better than getting taken by the mechanic shop because you don't know what they are talking about!

Glad to have you aboard!

Peter

actually i use the latex gloves from work to keep my paws clean.

so technically i guess i don't get my hands dirty.

thanks for the welcoming thoughts. i look forward to enjoying this forum for long time.

for those of you who wanted to know how i got this car. the car was my dad's. i drove it in college (univ of florida - go gators!) and never bothered to replace it. replace it with what? a honda?
so far, it has been the right financial reason. i know people who are slaves to their vehicles. $700/mo on a BMW? some even lease them because they can't afford to buy them!

as you can tell, i like my independence. someone told me once..."once you drive a benz, there is no other car in the world for you". how true. I drove a coworker's 2003 honda accord at lunch today. It's a POS. Rearview visibility is half the benz. The trunk height is so high that it takes up half the height of the rear glass. The "C" pillar is so thick on that thing. Major blind spot. Sorry, I'll stick to my 240.

That seems to be an epidemic these days, all the new cars have trunks that look like they have something shoved up their b**t!

Rearward visibility is bad in nearly all the new vehicles. High trunks are for aerodynamics -- they reduce drag -- but really interfere with visiblity. Sadly, the last low trunk MBs were the W123 chassis -- take good care of that 240!

It is true, once you drive a Benz --- I'm hooked, and that was by a flogged out 72 220D!

Is that why my TD gets better MPG than my sedan?...last night I ran down to San Antonio to have dinner with Thing Two. I netted 29.6 mpg in the wagon for the 156 mile round trip!!! I've never seen anything better than 25 and change on Lilly the sedan.

Of course, turbodiesels truly luv that good 'ol cold, thick air too.
