Cigarette boat:

Long, skinny speedboat, normaly about 25 ft long, twin Rolls Merlins or Allison V12s, used to smuggle cigarettes in from Cuba to Miami. Outruns the Coast Guard cutters. Usable only in flat water, and nothing but ostentation if not used for smuggling.

Hmmmm, not a lotta water in Indiana I guess.... "Cigarette" boat is the generic term for 35-45ft offshore racing deepvee monohulls. Cigarette was a manufacturer of the first and best of this type of boat when offshore racing became popular and the term Cigarette is like saying Q-tip instead of cotton swab. Generally they are powered with 1-3+ bigblocks making obscene amounts of horsepower. RT

Driving a Mercedes has been.. Interisting.

I've had it about a month I guess now. Familier with them previously, but this is my first daily driver. I get compliments on it regularly, especially from people that half way know what there looking at(a twenty year old car not rusted out/ragged in N.C.).

I actually enjoy telling people I drive a mercedes. You get the usual "so you make a lot of money?" phrased one way or another and I simply smile and shake my head "no" and leave it at that. I've always been one for makeing people wonder.

They wonder more at a 6ft tall/145lb 25yo with hair down to his watse and a passion for antique wool jackets saying this.
Then they ask if I'm a model.(no) Then they give up.

I drove a pristine 78 Lincoln for a long while and got similier comments(and nowhere near the fuel mpg). The C3 Vette got looks like the 300D does, and a lot more stoplight kids trying it.

Odly, I see a few 123's around here now and again, and all the drivers kinda stare then look away. None of them look happy.
I don't get it.

Scott

When people do that to me I can truthfully tell them that mine has power windows, a rear window defroster, heat and AC(works), ACC(works), an alarm, keyless entry, remote starter, power locks(works, one electric, rest vacum), a cd player, satalite radio, and an mp3 player in the boot that interfaces with the radio to provide about 130 CD's at will. In a real car with real metal, real leather, real wood, getting a real CONSISTANT 25mpg, for a real cheap price. THAT shuts them up.

They havent invented anything(that I'd actually want) that I cannot integrate into an older vehicle.

Cigarette is a generic term for offshore race boats, but it's also a brand name. They're typically 38'-46' in length with either twin or triple engines producing 550-1300 horsepower each. Designed by Don Aronow to take on extremely rough oceans while still maintaining a high rate of speed. Drug smugglers used them in the 70's and 80's, but when Aronow started making these boats for the government as well he was murdered outside his boat factory. Expect to pay $500,000-$900,000 for a brand new one. You can visit the Cigarette website at:

for real

I get this too. People see me drive up and they're like "must be nice!" Like this one lady that works the security guard gate where I work, she's always like "I wish I made lots of money like this young man." I wanna tell her that my '95 E320 costs less than that new american truck she's driving and is a whole lot more efficient and stylish.

I've also had two guys date me for my car, and then when they realized that I'm not "rich" they run off. I'm 24 and in college, I drive a nice car, doesn't mean I'm rich... Hello!

Anyhoo, but I'm not ashamed of having a Benz, I love it!!!

You should start dating women. They would never use you for your car.

Weird to think there are people who are impressed by the NEW car someone is driving.

I had a car once that was impressive, a 65 Chevelle SS, metalflake blue, turned the quarter in under 10. In any small town half the people would wave and smile, in a city police cars would run red lights to keep a tail on you. The car's effect on women can't be described in a family publication.

In comparison, my M-B is invisible. Probably just as well, because I didn't make the damn thing, I bought it. Something anyone can do. If they're smart enough.

I enjoy owning a benz :)

Was helping a friend do some car shopping, and we were looking for a mb, kinda cool when salespeople walk up to us and ask "can we help you guy's?" and my friend usually would just turn around and point at my benz....and ask, got one of those? I've never seen so many sales-peoples sholders droop...

Then there's the new mb salesman, my favorite.. they usually ask if I'm ready to trade it the old car... I just smile, na she's just a spring chicken by benz stanards, only got 200k on ol' betsy, she still has 800k to go.

My job is as a " geotechnical Supervisor". That means I drive to various construction sites where I have technicians ( inspectors). I make periodic visits to see how the jobs and my inspectors are going. I have driven a variety of vehicles in this capacity--F250 Diesel, Bronco II, NBissan Pick up etc. When I use the 240D, I get a totally different reaction from superintendents when I arrive on site. People just impute more respect to people in a Benz.

ok

MBwD... actually I know of quite a few women that have dated guys and girls for their car, money, whatever... These are all people we generally avoid. So regardless of who you think I should date... the point of my post was that some people freak out and get the wrong idea completely when they see you in a nice car. Looks can be so deceiving sometimes.

Back in the late '80s, when I had my '72 250, I got occasional "rich guy" remarks, but now that I'm driving a '60 Fintail, people just think it's so cool!

Happy Motoring, Mark

I know

I was just being very sarcastic, as people are most familiar with women being the ones using men for their car, $, etc. (stereotypically).

I have four MB's in my yard in a very remote area of the Costal Mts. of Oregon . The people that live around here are aging hippies ,young hippies trying to reinvent the sixties and loggers. The only other Mercedes within a twenty mile radius of our house that I can think of is a 190E that I sold to a friend that has a summer place here.

The old hippies drive an assortment of beat up Volvos ,Camrays and aging SUV's . The loggers drive newer white Ford 4WD pick ups and the young hippies drive new or newer Toyota pickup trucks (not sure where the young hippies get the money to buy them but I can guess)

Do I get comments about my cars take a guess.
Do I care if people thing me odd ,think me rich, or think me a fool take another guess........

I bet if you sent me a letter to

Old Codger
with all those Mercedes
Deadwood OR 97430

I bet it would be in my PO box ,slip a 20 in it and I will bless your car........

William Rogers.........
