two piece manifold question
Hi All,
The accordian shaped pipe that connects the two piece exhaust manifold together on my 603 has a crack and leaks. Can it be changed without removing part of the manifold? Thanks, Brian

dieselmania,
I have no idea, but I see your question slipping unanswered to the bottom of the list, so I am responding to bring it back up to the top. I changed a piece that kind of fits the description on the 240D, but on that car the accordion part connects the EGR valve to the intake manifold, and while I did this with the two manifolds in place that new part was pretty sharp edged and I nearly cut my finger in half getting in positon. Good luck and I hope someone with experience pipes up. Jim

I have not tried it, but "gsxr" has and reported that the manifold MUST be removed - and I believe him!

I've done this onerous task, and you need to remove the entire manifold to do the job correctly. I combined this task with a number of others to justify the amount of work that's required. You should be prepared to replace the exhaust gaskets, the turbo-to-manifold gaskets, the turbo oil-feed and return line gaskets, etc.
It's also an excellent opportunity to inspect your turbo, since it must be removed. I gooped up the accordian with red high-heat permatex for extra measure--it sealed great. Oh, and watch out for those exhaust studs toward the rear of the head. They're prone to breaking and/or stripping. Good luck! |
