Tach making AGGRAVATING noise!

Okay, the tach in my 84 300D is making a very annoying noise above 3200rpm. It sounds exactly like when a small electric motors bearings (like in a toy or RC model) goes bad. Kinda a snik-snik-snik-snik sound. Fairly loud, so much so that I can't stand driving any faster than 68mph or it starts driving me mad. I know its the tach as it also does it on heavy acceleration whenever the tach needle passes 3200rpm..... I dunno how the tach works but I assume its some magnetic/electric motor affair. Anyone have this problem? Is it worth disassembling the tach and trying to lube it? I suppose I could disconnect the tach drive and motor on in peace in the meantime... Thanks, RT
