I checked out a 1985 300SD today. There are 260k miles on the clock
and the general condition is good. Power items like windows, seats etc
work.
the engine sounds good and there was no smoke.

I am not too familar with MB diesels so maybe someone could help me on
this. I noticed that in Drive one has to really press on the
accelerator pedal to get it moving but in reverse it rolled on its
own. Is this normal.

They are asking 3000 and there are no records to speak of.

It sounds like this is your first MB diesel... if so, take it to a MB mechanic and have it checked out. If it's in good condition, $3000 is a fair price, but you can probably bargain down because it's got almost 300k miles.

$3k sounds a bit much for one with 260k miles unless the interior and exterior are in outstanding condition, sounds more like $2k or a little above that.

$3000 is probably around book value. i would be a little scared of the mileage with no service history. Like the others said, a little over $2000 sounds fair.
