1980 300D transmission

i'm new to the Mercedes-Benz
diesel world so HELP!

bought a 1980 300D w/95K on the odometer - straight, clean jelly bean

this vintage vehicle was designed for the maximum USA highway speed of 55mph-
driving down the highway at todays posted legal speeds (to my ear) sounds like i'm really stressing thsi 5-banger past the max - it has the factory 4-speed automatic

?query is? - did MB design and build a "BOLT ON " retro-fit auto transmission that will give me a higher top gear ratio, or is there a higher gear (lower #) differential ratio to change-out w/ similar results?

well if your read in here you'll see that everyone is wishing to swap the manuel for the auto for increased performance.

Also.... you should have no problem going over 55. If it is a NA engine it will just take longer to get there. Also diesels like to be worked the crazy buggers. Unless yours has problems (which it may have) they scream with delight (aka- make lotta noise) when you push them.
