Bigger fuel filter

I would like a larger fuel filter with a drain for water for my 85 MB 300 turbo diesel. Does anyone know if that is possible. Thanks.

dang,

The folks on the biodiesel forum recommend getting a used Ford F150 7.3L filter unit because they are cheap and the cartriges are available for them. I haven't tried this but like you I feel like I'd like a bigger filter and a water drain. Something to think about. I'm pretty sure the Ford unit is made by Racor and is of good quality. It would be alot less expensive than a new Racor.

Dieseldiehard,

How do you like your 115? I've been off and on looking for a 115 220D. I really prefer them to the post-basher-bumper era cars and like the wing vents. Never can have enough MB's

around 45 bucks at Summit Racing or JC whitnety. Both designed by and use Permacool filters (usually means ordering for filter..... stores dont carry it.) Filter aroudn 14 buks to replace. It filters down to TWO MICRONS and has a water drain.

Perm-Cool makes three models of these. One is a HIGH FLOW model. you dont need that. Another is for a dual carb set up and has two feed thru ports (one for each carb)..... which of course you dont need. Yep....... its the only one left that you need. Summit can order any of them. I dont know about JCwhitney.

I have heard it advised to keep the stock OEM filter and add the 2 Micron AFTER that filter. Not sure how that would work. Have not put too much thought into it yet.

coachgeo,

Please explain the theory of adding additional filtering AFTER and not BEFORE the existing fuel filter. Racor sells many of their filters as "fuel polishing" filters which would be added before the existing filter. This would trap water before it gets to and fills up your existing filter. For this service, the filter cartriges come in coarser ratings (10, 5 microns) assuming that the existing filter on the engine is going to take care of anything smaller.

I'd think that you would prefilter to 2/5/10 microns/trap water and let the existing fuel filter take out any of the smaller particles.

DDH: You folks in CA are so lucky (at least in the strict older MB availability sense). We have some good cars around here and some rust buckets.

The OEM spin on fuel filter is 5 microns on an MB. I'm guessing the point was made so that both filters aid each other. Puting the 2 micron in the fuel path before the OEM would mean the OEM is doing nothing. Putting the 2 between OEM and the IP would mean the OEM cuts particles to 5 and then the 2 cuts it even further before entering the IP.
