While we'ew talking about manuals
I've seen a guy who lists CD manuals on ebay. He claims they are not M-B, or Mitchel. Has anyone bought one of these? What are they? Are they complete? I would like a set for my '82 240--are these worthwhile. ( I already have the Haynes, and I would like a more complete reference).

I bought one a year ago for $15 and it has tons of models ...I have not even looked at all it has as only use the 84 300D but it has NA models and lots of others. It is well worth the money and I think it has all that is on the site in the thread mentioned above. Mine was two disks.

MSFowler, I suggest the 615,616,na617 Factory shop manual... it is much better than the 617 turbo manual ( I have both ).

Damn! That's a nice site to know about!!! I just downloaded a wad of stuff for near-future reference (as in this weekend, when I hit the boneyard). I'll have to fork out the $ for one of the CDs of all this. Very nice to know about; thanks for posting!

Are the manuals you have the cd or paper. I have a Service Manual Chassis and Body, Series 123, Volume 1 and want to know how many volumes there are in this series. It is very good and I perfer paper to CD anytime.
Thanks..... Jon |

I bought a CD manual on eBay for $11 total. Turns out is was a CD-R COPY of the MB factory manual CD. Be careful and ask questions first. I reported him to eBay and got an automated response saying he is under an investigation. I haven't heard anything from eBay or seen the seller post anything for about 2 months now.
I also made a disk image of the entire 270MB web page "manual" just in case the site hit's any legal problems. |

Paper vs. CD
Seems to me the nice thing about a CD manual is that you can print out a few pages for the job you need to do, and get them good n' greasy w/o worrying about ruining your original. That said, I have only ever used Haynes and Bentley, etc... print manuals. For the $, though, I might just aim for the MB CD this time.
Thoughts? Chris

The CD is really good for that reason. YOu can print, ruin and throw away and have a sheet at a time on your engine or wherever. You can blow it up really large to see detail if you have to also. I have a Haynes coming to me via ebay to supplement what I already have. Tons of info on the CD once you get used to it. Between the CD and these internet Mercedes lists and Bulletin boards you kind of have it all. The info here and the other mailing list is first class and is really the way I have become aware of all I know about the cars.

There was a time when people complained that the photo reproduction in the CD was not very good... which I think was from the fact that the 617 turbo book was full of many too dark photos...
All my manuals are paper... I like the Haynes manual for some of the pictures... but it leaves some things out totally... So you also need the Factory shop manuals... and I really prefer the paper ones.... random access is faster... LOL.. I find using PDF on my computer very very slow.... I would not own a large file which had to be accessed from a PDF file.....I also have trouble controlling the font size my printer prints with... sometimes it lets me be in charge...sometimes NOT... Here is what I have picked up/seen to exist so far.... 1. 123 chassis manual vol 1 2. 123 chassis manual vol 2 3. 615,616,617na engine manual 4. 123 heating,ac and climate control manual 5. 123 electrical manual ( I think it has the vacuum routing also) 6. 123 manual trans overhaul manual 7. maintenance manual 123 8. engine manual 617.952 turbo 9. engine manual 110 gas The official MB manuals are not very easy to read... but they have all sorts of info not in the Haynes manual. |

Thanks for your list and I have to agree with your conclusion on the CD. I do like it for lots of reasons, but have to admit it is the one I look at last if I cannot find what I want in the others. I did get mine on the cheap and was definately worth the 15$ bur would have to give good thought to the over $100 for the official version. You just can't beat a paper copy and if you want a copy to work with in the garage with you can always copy one on a copier.
Again thanks for your input on the various manuals. One more note is I use for quick reference sometimes is the Performance Products catalog as it has broken down pics of the whole car including vacum routings. Very good for free and you can order one for any MB at the dot com address. THey come every few months once you sign up. Jon |

I have mentioned before how nice those exploded line drawings in the Performance Products catalog are ... just forgot above... When you call Fastlane it is nice to have proper nomenclature for the part you want...not say ' that round thing with the square end next to the bigger blue thing attached to the passenger side of the engine "
