Cracked upper oil pan I mean-whats worth keeping?
 

I have a 76 240D and an 82 240D parts car with cracked block, and am wondering whats worth getting off the 82 before scraping it. How about the springs, brakes, vacuum pieces, those sorts of things

yes-brakes, relays & switches (most), seat covers, seat backs,
wheels, fuses & light bulbs, engine fan, jack, mirrors, pedals, star,
hood badge, engine all the way to back to differenial, shifter, antena, air conditioning compressor

no-springs, radiator, trunk badge, door panels, seats, vacuum
parts except connectors and lines

conversion-windshield washer pump, oil filter,

maybe- sunroof motor, door jams, trunk lock cylinder, rear axles,
brake booster, arm rests, window motors or cranks, parking
brake knob

I am confused.... your other thread talks about a cracked oil pan but this one says cracked block... very very different.... Are both cracked ?

Just read some other posts, and apparently it is the upper oil pan not the block. For Engatwork, the dash is black with a crack, but it is an '82, but I'm not sure I'm ready for the oil pan swap, I'm a pretty bush league mechanic.

If it were me I would keep the engine and tear it down at your liesure and keep all internals, most importantly the cylinder head, crankshaft, rods, pistons and so forth.

If the pistons and rods are good a bare block, sleeved to fit those pistons would make a fresh engine.

Well, contrary to what the other person in the houshold would say the easiest way to store all those parts is........ Keep the car! You can roll it around to other places on its own wheels. All the parts stay orgainzied and remind you right where they should go when you swap them out into the car your are going to repair. Roll it where you want it. Put it on jack stands taking weight off the tires ever so slightly. Or Higher if your going to constantly be climbing under it. Infact..... if you can store it higher it will help prevent critters from nesting in it. Invest in a good tarp and change it out every year. Use a weed eater to keep it tidy around the car and make the other half happy. (Also helps with critter infestations.) Put rat traps around so the rats go after the trap food and not your wiring etc.

How do you convince the other half. Remind them that to store all the parts you need to keep can either cost:
1. ----> a buch of money:
- Building storage shed or adding on to garage some storage cabinets to keep everything organized
2. ---->a little money
-jack stands and a tarp maybe a tent style Garage/carport

Took a better look, with better light, and there is a hole you can stick your fingers into and feel what I'm guessing is a rod end. Ouch

In the block or the pan ? Can't tell by the picture arrow...

So this hole...are the edges of it going inward like a big rock got to it or outwards like something left the crankcase in a hurry...

The edges of the hole aren't distorted, like a cracked coffe cup with a piece out, and on the lower oil pan there's a small jagged puckered-out hole the I can't tell if it went on a rock or had a piece of something shoot out of there like a .22 round went of inside

Isn't the upper oil pan cast aluminium? So if it's hit with something it would "shatter" and not warp like sheet metal does.

I don't know for sure but it looks like cast iron.
