"Shock" Squeak

I just had someone look at an annoying (not minor) squeek coming from the right front wheel well. He said it was a bad shock. Does this sound right? I was thinking bushing, maybe ball joint. If so, how simple is a shock replacement for the beginner but handy DIYer (I am brand new to this car). Thanks.

Im about to do the same with new bilstein HDs. Seems really easy assuming that youre talking about a w123 diesel, or similar.
