Talking dumb newbie question- apologies in advance

I'm the proud new owner of a 1981 240D. Unfortunately, what little I have learned from working on my 95 C220 does not really translate well to the W123. Specifically, I am so brain dead that I cannot, for the life of me, find the fusebox. If someone could kindly point me as to where it is hidden, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Eric

95c220,

Welcome! And there are no stupid or other bad questions. Not asking if you are unsure is a bad decision.

The fuse box is on the driver's side firewall in the corner near the hood hinge. The cover is held down with two thumbscrews. Loosen them and then you have to manipulate the cover to get it out. Sometimes it seems like it won't come out, but it will and you will eventually learn the path. Good luck, Jim

ROFLMAO! There's no way to tell somebody how to do that. I have to re-learn it every time.

You know the old saying, the only stupid question, is the one not asked.

I had somewhat the same experience. We bought a 300TD for my wife and I did lots of work on it. Felt so comfortable I bought a 300SD thinking I could transfer my knowledge to it. Well...not the case for many of the systems. So I began my learning process on that as well. I am real comfy with 123's and 126's now.

Welcome and enjoy your new ride!

Rick,

I am always awed by how they designed that cover to be so hard to get out, without the use of modern CAD tools. Seems like you can always get it out, but you are correct - it seems like the way you get it out depends on some variable affecting the parts or something. Like the clearances change around with temperature or the thing responds to which thumbscrew you loosen first.

I was going to attempt to describe it more thoroughly, and decided against that. I use too many words just describing obvious things, and figured I wanted to do something else tonight, too. This just seems to follow that old German saying,
"Warum so einfach wen es leicht kompliziert sein kann?" or "Why so simple when it easy to make it complicated?"

Jim

Thanks! I love this forum- I spent a good 10 minutes working on trying to open that exact box last night- at least I know it wasn't completely in vain. And to GA-W123 Diesel, that is an amazing link. I love my new hobby...
