I have fantasized occasionally about

my neighbor's brother's '66 912, for which I did an engine overhaul about 18 years ago -- if it every begins to burn oil again, I'd love to see if a VW turbodiesel, laid on its side as they were in the Vanagon Diesels, could fit back there. But the car is getting a bit too rusty to worry about, I'm afraid.

Cool YES!

In Europe, you can get a C32 CDI AMG with a 6 speed manual transmission and of course, a 3.2L CDI. Too cool!

If you want a fast diesel, take an OM617, add an alloy head, throw an intercooler into the fray, turn up the IP, adjust the boost, and you can get 230 hp. About the same as the new C30 CDI AMG over in Europe.

That's what Mercedes did back in the '70's. And that setup was considered going into production.

On the third generation C111, Mercedes clocked speeds in excess of 200 mph with that diesel.

Do a search and you'll find more info on what I mean.

The 300D coupe is a sports car in the marketing sense.

edit - Doh! I meant 300CD.

Get a good 300CD, get an engine from a S400 CDI, swap engines and you will have a sports car and a slow car.

My little TD Audi has been accused of being sporty -I like to agree. While she's not a tire burner, its a quick rush to the speed limit and beyond. A sport suspension provides a tight responsive control and small turning radius.

I've also seen some sporty Jetta turbo diesels as well.

I'd post a pic - but I can 't figure out how to make this thing work.

I'll go read the instructions.

Watch out for the torque on those new diesels. They can be awfully touchy.

IMHO, I think that the 2004 VW Jetta GLS TDI is sporty for a diesel. I test drove one last week, and it had great response right off the line, and it is IMO, the sportiest diesel I've ever driven. I've test driven 84, 85, and 87 300Ds, a 87 300SDL, and even the 87 300D and 300SDL seemed slow compared to the TDI to me, although they were faster than the OM617. So I think there are sporty diesels out there.

VAUXHALL ECO-SPEEDSTER PROVES SAVING FUEL CAN BE FUN

The world premiere of the spectacular Eco-Speedster concept at this year’s Paris Motor Show (28 September to 13 October) marks the start of the biggest diesel offensive in Vauxhall’s history.

From now until the end of 2003 Vauxhall will introduce, across the range, four all-new diesel engines with power outputs up to 177 hp. The launch of Eco-Speedster marks the start of this new emphasis on diesel power. It demonstrates how lightweight aerodynamic bodywork and a new 1.3 litre CDTI common-rail diesel engine can achieve an amazing top speed combined with miserly fuel consumption.

During initial testing the 112 hp concept car reached a maximum speed of more than 155 mph while fuel consumption on the combined cycle was an incredible 113 mpg.

It always amuses me when people list a bunch of MB diesels like this, and they leave out the E300. My partner and I have raced the TDI and E300 numerous times, and there is no contest. As sporty as the Jetta might feel, the E300 leaves it in the dust.

On an E300. BTW, it also has 4 valves per cylinder and the car comes with an intercooler.

I have been researching diesel performance and estimated roughly the same power output of the 617 with the same mods other than the alloy head. What advantages does the alloy head give in the way of HP? Is there allmost as much gains in just pocket porting/smoothing the factory iron head? Does anyone know of or have any experience in porting/polishing techniques or advantages with diesel engines? I have a spare engine that I wanted to rebuild. I have the intake and intercooler thing pretty much figured out on paper, but wanted to investigate mods in the stroke/piston and cam/head areas for HP gains. Should a performance diesel topic be started? Anyone interested?
