Yea... but i kinda like the idea of being able to destroy a deer on a back road and limp it home without air bag burns. But thats me i like options.

That wouldn't set off the airbags on most modern cars. Even on my old SDL that wouldn't set them off, since Mercedes didn't use impact sensors but a deceleration sensor. A broken flex desk can set them off though, that has happened!

I don't know if the others do it but Lexus has a two stage airbag that deploys more softly if it senses a less severe impact.

I couldn't care less about the car I rather live, I can always buy another car.

Exactly.

While Mercedes may have been near the top of the safest cars in the 1980's, there is no comparison with newer technology and features.

I too would take a 2011 Benz in a crash any day over a 1985 300D. I have insurance, they can buy me a new car, but not a new life.

Unfortunately I cannot afford nor do I like the styling of the newer models. One day....

Okay 2 stories:
A friend borrowed my 89 300E and ran it into a tree dead center head on at about 50 MPH. The engine came up slightly and back so it split the dash dead center and pushed towards the firewall. The hood crunched in. The airbag deployed and other than where he hit his face when his hand came off the wheel he was unhurt. All the doors opened and closed properly. The chassis did what it was designed to do.
Now my present ride was my dad's since new. I think it was a little over 12 years ago he was in PA and the car in front of him started to make a left turn without signaling. dad slowed and came to a stop. The car behind him was not paying attention and by the time he tried to stop he hit the back of the 85 300SD on the driver side rear corner. Dad says he felt a bump but not much else.
The other car was doing about 40-45 mph. I have the insurance papers somewhere but the car was repaired and you can not tell it ever happened.
Again the chassis did as designed. Now Dad's car does have ABS but no air bag in this case ABS would not matter anyway.

oh.
my latest parts car is a 95 TE
it ran off the road to avoid a deer and a truck swerving to avoid it as well...
front end severely mashed. both headlights destroyed, right side of the lower radiator support bent in about 4" driver's tire imbeded into the doorjam/fenderwell.car wend off the road, fell down an embankment, and collided with a fence.
air bags did not deploy.
