early W123, 240D linkage

I am swapping the engine in a "78" 240D for one I rebuilt which is a later engine. That part of the linkage in the "78" thats back there by the starter motor and hooks into a bar on the firewall. going back toward the engine, theres an "arm" and then a BIG rubber washer. OK My question is how do you let the linkage go at the rubber washer. It looks to me you just pull it out of the rubber washer, but I dont want to go and break something, so can anyone tell me about this rubber grommet. Also whats with that little "shock absorber thing. I pulled the engine on my "79" and dont think I saw one of these. Have a good evening

I have most things disconnected then it became "Miller Time"
