Hood hinge gone

All I did was lift the hood. About half way up, I heard this *POP* and saw the plug that holds the hinge to the hood fly across my yard. I have not been able to find the plug. I can't find the plug on Fastlane or any other place. I really want to fix this, it just looks so cheap using a hood prop when a $2 plug is the cause.

Would one from a W126 work? The nearest salvage W123 is 45 minute drive away from here.

It was perfect timing when I brought in my TD for the tailhousing work. It started snowing hard no more than 10 minutes after I closed the garage door.

126 -> 123 is worth a try. To help, I'd look at the boneyard on the way home but it's been raining meows and barks all afternoon. I'd need my kayak to get over to where the 123s are at the local yard.

What ever you decide, be sure to post your results...

Seen a couple '82 model sedans, and they used a permanent rivit type fastener that was not meant to be removed. The older models used a special threaded bolt with a nut attached to the hood. I bet you could use a bolt from an older car and a nut. I would think Mercedes would have a replacement bolt of some kind to replace the rivit as well.

II bet a bolt with some washers between the moving surfaces would work also. Only problem is the holes are two very different sizes.

Lightbulb broken hood hinge rivit

82-300td,
Recently, I was looking at some used diesels............one of them had this very same problem......one of my mechanic friends led me to believe that this used to be more of a common problem.......and that a replacement was availible at the MB "stealer".....fortunately, this part "should " not be very expensive

Hillbilly, a member of our forum, works at Apex Salvage down on Peoria. From time to time, they have 123's available. He also told me about a 240D sitting at a garage in Jenks that is for sale for $100. I went and looked at it, it would be a great source of parts if you have room.

Hope this helps

Ohtooman, is Apex a "Pull parts yourself" place? I like to pull things myself, I can spot parts I didn't think of getting at the time (Like the dash cover and brake pad sets I found at Affordable Imports).

Do you know of any other salvage yards in Tulsa with W123 or W126? Eastside pick-a-part had a 380SEL and Affordable Imports has a 83 300SD, 81 300D, and 82 240D (They won't let me touch the 240!?). I have not been able to find any others without looking through the yard myself (Some didn't have clue what they had in their own yards).

I don't have any space for a parts car, but believe me, I would love to get one.

82 300td,

I don't know if Apex is a pull a part place. You would just have to call them. As far as other places are concerned just ask Hillbilly. I bet you he could tell you more than you want to know. His name is David, I can't remember his last name.

Hope this helps

ON the other hand..... LOL
why don't you just get a better looking piece of wood ? Use Mesquite or Walnut... sand/ wax... will look very nice.... and you can use it when your hood is not up to play with your dog... can you spell " FetchIT" ?

I found the part needed at the stealership. It's $2.87 and they call it a bushing.

After 2 months, they finaly got in my offset woodruff key (The one I ordered the wrong degree of).

I need to add the MB part number to this thread.

Another good reason to call Phil.

Have a great day.
