Hehe, just to add a little humor here, I wanted to let you all know that on my return trip to Cleveland today from Cincinnati, I ran 201 miles in 2 hours and 10 minutes, shattering my previous record of 2.26 (which was done in my 380SE). Mind you, this record breaking feat was done in my W116 '80 300SD. I kept her buried all the time (unless a truck slowed us down) and the tach saw 4,700rpm quite frequently and I don't think the speedometer needle left the "pegged" mark but maybe twice! What a great day! Barely any traffic and not one cop! Woohoo!! Not very often I get a chance to REALLY open her up like that. Anyhow, immediately before we got on the freeway, I filled up my tank (holds 21.3 gallons) and upon arrival in Cleveland, my reserve light was on! Usually, with somewhat "normal" driving, when I get home to Cleveland, the needle will be at the halfway point with around 209 miles covered, this time it was almost empty with 201 miles covered! I was just getting a laugh out of that, imagining how this one trip cost me $24.50 whereas that same amount of money usually takes me there and back! BTW, I am not leaking any fuel. She was just thirsty today! Moral of the story, all you diesel owners, get 'em out there and let them loose! This trip made me realize why I love Mercedes once again...What other car could one possibly thrash for 200+ miles straight and still have it perform beautifully over and over again? Ahh, diesels.

Wow! Not Bad...for a diesel. What's your record with your old 6.9?!

Man Aaron, you must have a hard time choosing which vehicle to take out!

Michael 07-25-2000 08:25 AM

Nice...hehehe.

Just think of theamount of gas the Interceptor would've eaten...I doubt you could've made the trip nonstop!!

Best regards, Michael

My 80 116.120 300 SD holds 25 gallons and has gone 750 miles (30 MPG) on one tank full. I like to see how far it will go on a tankful, not how fast. It is more ecologically sound. How come you tank only holds 21.3? Manual says 25 gallons also.

Well, the 6.9 was no economy champ, but I did see around 141-142mph one time in it. Much smoother than any other MB I've driven at that speed. The Jensen would have needed to be filled up going that fast probably about 20 miles outside of Cincinnati! But in that car it'd be worth it, as it's one of my favorite GT cars of all time. Finally, to reply to the last post, I usually will not run my diesel that hard but wanted to see how well my new tires would fare during high-speed consistent running. Verdict was: Not as good as the previous Michelins did, but for being $20 cheaper each, they felt pretty darn good!

Aaron, hope you had a V-1 detector in use while you were setting your new diesel land speed record from Cincy to Cleveland. I did not know they had autobahn's in Ohio. Ha! Maybe I need to visit Ohio!!!

In the old '82 300SDT I can't remember worst mileage - it averaged mid-twenties always and I was relatively afraid of banging it against the limit for a long time (as it had 200k miles on it when dad finally passed it down).

On a California - Oregon trip recently I had my 190 2.6 well over 100mph for a full tank of premium and got only 210 miles out of it. Probably a good thing, as though I really enjoyed moving quickly (with my wife asleep at shotgun), the expense of keeping that pace forced me to keep it to a reasonable (read: ticket-avoidant) 80-90mph thereafter.

Johnny,

Actually I wish I'd have had a V1, but for now my trusty Passport 5000 will have to do. It still can sniff out the bears at a reasonable distance, but sometime in the near future I must get a V1, especially in the BMW.

I tripped over this thread somehow and wondered if anybody knows this was out of the ordinary, or can you really run diesels floored for hours, up hill under load and down without harming them? If so, does anybody know why or what makes them able to do this??

That's quick

Man, you were running quick for any car. My 2.6 drives great around a 100 but never really pushed it past that.

Fastest I went in car was 132 mph in my 1988 (new at the time) mustang 5.0L.

Got my need for spead fulfilled with my bikes:
1995 Honda CBR 900RR hit 154 mph racing another bike. Nothing quite like passing cars at tripple there speed. Bike was still pulling and speed climbing when I came up on traffic and had to back off.
1999 Yamaha R1. Never looked at speedo, too busy keeping my eyes shut. That bike used to lift the front wheel at 75 mph without trying. Approximately 400 lbs with rear wheel horse power somewhere around 130. Do the math, nothing pulled like that bike did.

Would love to get my hands on an E55 AMG.........

Thanks for the memories,
Joel

I think I can answer this one! Mainly they tend to be slow, and floored doesn't equal terribly fast.. constant 100-110 mph won't harm too many cars.. That said, diesels do last longer and are 'tougher', but no real reason a petrol can't do this too.

later!

Why diesels last

For one thing diesels ingest a lubricant and even once it's exploded there's still unburned lubricant in the exhaust. Whereas gasoline is a solvent and washes lubricant off the cylinder walls and once exploded it creates acids that attack downstream components such as mufflers, etc. My 240D/300 G-wagen has a muffler that is stamped with the date of 1979 and there's only a little flecking of the galvanising. Everybody I've asked has never seen a rust out diesel muffler or exhaust pipe.

As for long term speed, in 1976 Mercedes took the gasoline engine out of their C111 Sport terror and replaced it with a 5 cylinder diesel which they trubocharged, intercooled, etc. and took the resulting car to the Nardi track in Italy. There they ran it for 50 hours straight averaging 156.9MPH.

Watch for pixs of my son's intercooled 1983 300Turbo Diesel.

Ben
