So much done, still having problems...

Hey Fellers,

A few months ago I posted about the problems with my 220D smoking. The car was having a hard time cold tarting, and would spew tons of white, unburned diesel smoke cold and hot.

I have recently spent lots of money fixing up the brakes, suspension, vacume pump, oil pan, ignition switch, and various other issues the car was having.

I also tried to fix the smoking problem. After testing the compression (good) and having the injectors cleaned and reset, the car still smoked. I found a great deal on a remanufactured injection pump. So, I had a shop install it. The mechanic I chose took months to get it done, and didn't know diesels very well . He messed up on timing the IP several times apparently, but I am not sure I trust him.

So, the car has good compression, a new IP, and decent injectors (I hope.).

But now, the car is far worse!!!

It is almost impossible to cold start. Takes mabye 30 seconds to a minute of turning over to finally catch and start running. Once it warms up, it runs okay. I think it has a miss though. On top of that, it has very slow throttle response. It is almost impossible to drive because it has almost no power and takes seconds to rev up to a decent accelerating RPM, without the clutch even engaged!!

I dont know what to do. The car feels like it is running on 2 or 3 cylinders or something. The mechanic I dealt with knows nothing, and I need to get this car straightened out soon. Can any one give me some suggestions?

Can't help with the fuel delivery problems, but to improve starting. get rid of the old loop type plugs and replace with the newer pencil type ones. There is a kit that converts the older larger diameter threads on loop style to the pencil type.

I would venture to guess that the timing's off by a mile...maybe he put the pump in 180° off?

Just a thought...good luck!

Maybe someone can recommend a good shop in Santa Cruz or Monterey area that could help you. Doubt you could make it over the 17 given the condition of the engine you describe.

Great shop in Santa Cruz called Valle European. Talk to Joe Gauci, tell him about your car. He knows these cars really well, unlike most of the younger techs who have no clue about these cars' little "love buttons" and quirks. 831-462-2100. He'll be straight with you, and won't have you do a bunch of things unecessary. Tell him the whole story too, about the new IP etc. Who did you have do that?

DO NOT GO to Specialized, they ripped me off big time with their sloppiness. WHen I think about them I feel .

Precombustion chambers

Well, lots of people are laughing by now see the title of this post... but after all the usual things are checked and ' set' ... and you still have a 'efficient burning of diesel fuel ' problem... it is time to pull the precombustion chambers and see if the tiny holes in them are plugged up... or if the Pintle is fried and laying in the bottom..... and it is not very hard to do... fortunately.. but many avoid it for some reason.... when you have them out you may can borrow a bore scope and look at your valves and cylinder condition also....
Ok,,, yall can stop laughing now....

IP on a 220D

I'm not sure if this is the same pump as I have on my 240D (m-style) but if i is there is a bolt at the back of the pump that controls max fuel delivery. This adjustment is fairly simple to make and fixed my smoking problem immediately. Since these cars run basically either at cruise or max fuel anytime you accelerate thsi could be a problem even on a rebuild if it was never adjusted.

BTW - I was able to check my prechambers when I had the head off the car...
