Dead Algae is leaving....Now how long?

Went through an algae attack on a (new to me) 300D. Changed all the filters including the tank strainer.

I'm using BioCide from Racor and have changed a few pre-filters. Still getting some plugging when the tank drops to about 5.5 gallons. When that happens the pre-filter gets clogged pretty quick with dead algae (the black particles, not the greasy algae). How long will this go on? Couple more tank fulls?

Any experience when this should die down (not sorry for the pun :-) ).

Eric

Well, this certainly varies amoung cars.... but if it keeps happening maybe you need to take the tank out and pressure wash it at a car wash....

Could go on a long time. The biocides usually "dry out" the algae so it won't slime things up, but if you are still getting a clogged prefilter that interferes with running, you could be at this forever. You may need to bite the bullet and have the tank cleaned.

Or you could run the tank down, then pull the drain plug at the bottom of the tank to flush those dead critters out with the help of your friend (gravity). Use a new gasket/0-ring, and keep the biocide going for a while. Some of those critters can be stubborn. And you can backflush the pre-filter.

I do not have any first hand experience with this issue but I've heard from semi-reliable sources that the only way to 100% cure this problem is to have the tank removed and steam cleaned.

I hope thats not the case here.

Black particles in my fuel pre filter....

Ahhh, after reading this post, I think I now know where the balck particles are coming from. I have what appeard to be speck of charchol in my pre filter. Is this algae? I figured it was carbon, however, this does not make sense as this sits in the pre filter.

Does algae look like tiny bits of charchol? If yes, I will search on a remedy.

Thank you...
