I can't stop looking!
I think I am addicted. I don't need another car. It would be nice to have a backup for times like now when I am waiting on a part for my 84 300, but it's not neccesary. I just got back from looking at a 116 300sd (1980). Paint is bad -- clearcoat. Back seats have no cushion. AC doesn't work. All typical problems of this model I figure. A little tough to start. Glow plug light did illuminate, but it took about 5 seconds to start. Front seats and wood are good---dash is cracked. NO RUST! Odometer stopped at 180k---owner estimates to be 212k. Driven daily with a stack of reciepts. Damn thing was great off the line and shifted well. I wish my 300 was that quick off the line. I offered 500 bucks, and he'll take it if no better offers within a week. I know how I am and I would probably want to make it near perfect and end up putting way to much money into it, but if I can just use it as a backup car and drive it tell it dies it will be worth it. No questions---just getting my thoughts down sometimes makes it more clear.
And if this falls through there's a manual 240 in one of the off-the-wall papers ---not auto trader or regular newspaper---seller is asking 1400 obo. I told you I'm addicted----What have you guys done to me???:D |
Damn! I'd be on a $500 116 like a duck on a June bug.

Good Luck. I have acquired two within the last year, so I understand your plight.

Yea, I have an accountability guy as well but it hasn't stopped me. I've purchased 10, 123's since May of 2001. The first one was stinkin near perfect and I was hooked.
I have been thinking about getting a backup as our five daily driver's sometimes gang up on me and go down at once. Don |
Dear 1stimer:
It's easy to cure your addiction. Buy a wrecked diesel with the intention to fix it. After several weeks of messing around, you will get tired of it and your addiction will be gone with the wind. :D Eric |
If I had the money and space I'd have a fleet of MBs (diesels and gassers alike) all for myself. I love my 190, and I can't get enough of mercedes!

LOL---Good idea. My wife is in the navy for about another year so if we ever get settled into a house with room for cars it could get ugly. I think it's probably a good thing that I am such a novice DIY'er or I can see how that could really add to the problem. I'm almost finished with my graduate degree in psychology so maybe I'll set up a diesel support group...DA...(Diesel's Anonymous) If I do get this SD though---I'm not doing anything to it (fingers crossed). It would also be nice to learn how to do things on a 500 dollar car. I wouldn't be so nervous about ruining something. |
