Smile I need a big favor.

I would like to do injectors, glow plugs etc this Sunday but I have not receved my manual yet from books4cars. The cars a 1987 300SDL with a 603. I just called them and they said there is no eta on it yet, translation hope you don't need it for awhile. Anyway I can figure out the glow plugs and pulling the manifold off thats real simple. But I don't know how to pull the injectors and what seals are below them. I would also like the torque specs of the injectors and the manifold. If someone could post pictures that would be great. Or just describe the process anything would help. Any special tools needed? Thanks in advance.

did you do a search on the subject.

I am sure that some one went over that topic before.

It should be easy to do if you got it all apart.

remove the fuel lines and remove the injectors.

Torque them down to spec. I dont have my cd with me but if you cant find it I can look it up later.

I would just leave them alone if there is nothing wrong with them. You can run diesel purge through them at alot less money and hassel.

IF you bought them already why not put them in.

THe ratchet is 27mm and torque of of memory is 55 lbs or 75 Nm.

I changed glow plugs on my 603 and elected to leave the injectors alone.

good luck

Don't you have to torque, te-torque, and torque again on the injectors or am I thinking about something else?

Hatterasguy,

I have the w124 service cd's, send me an email and I'll reply with the pdf files from the service cd. I believe your SDL has the same engine as my D. I probably won't get to sending it tonight. Most likely from work tomorrow where the internet is faster than the phone line at home.

Hattarasguy,

What symptoms do you have that you think yhou need to work on your engine?

If it starts easily, GP are fine. Noe need to "fix" them.

What runnung conditions do you have that makes you think your injectors need service?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thanks guys you have been a lot of help! P.E.Haiges the reason I'm changeing then is I can hear a strange sound comeing from injector number 4. I guess it would be called "nailing" the car also skips when started. Since the glowplugs are probably original, as are the injectors I think there due for replacement. I want this car to run 100%.

Hatterasguy,

I would first swiitch the #4 injector with another cylinder and see if the noise moves with the imjector. If the noise moves, then its a bad injector. If not, its something else that rebuilding the injector won't correct.

As far as the GP, if the engine starts easily they are OK and don't need to be replaced. Did you do a resistance chaek on the GP? If one or 2 are different from the others, you might replace them and see if the miss goes away.

One more question, is a special socket required to pull the injectors? Thanks P.E.Haiges I should move that injector arond and see if the noise follows it, I'll try that. But at 233k they could probably be replaced so I will do them all. The glow plugs I already have so they will be going in. This will be a good oppertunity for me to clean out the intake manifold, and break the egr.

Hatterasguy,

A 27mm or 1 1/16 deep socket will work to remove the injectors. Either should be available from Sears. This socket also works on the crankshaft nut to turn the engine by hand.

BTW, the injectors on my 300SD have 250,000+ miles on them and I'm not about to repace them as long as the engine runs well with no knocks other than the norman idle rattle. GP also will be replaced as required, I.E. when they are dead.
