Rebuilt axle halves- How long did they last?

I'm curious about how long the rebuilt axel halves havelasted and what is everyones experience.

I'm still on the original axles in my cars so I'm doing this just to get a statistical sample of what everyone has experienced.

Dave

PS This is the second poll. Rick pointed out that he has his installed with 10,000 miles and they are still good. I did not have that option.

CVJ Axles rebuilts out of Denver CO. 35,000 on one and 7,000 on the other (car totaled, I kept the rebuilts and are awaiting failure of the boots in the current 300D). (CVJ only reboots otherwise good axles).

Not to sound ignorant, but how do you know if your axle-shafts are going out?

They get dressed up and put on perfume!!!!

Dave

You get a grinding sound from the rear. either all the time or in a particular turn. If the boot tears and the grease comes out. Debris will get is and they will go south soon.

I put on rebuilt axles from Advance for 150 each and they have lasted 50k so far. I think that's worth it!

I've done several cars,

The rebuids tended to go out quickly- less than 15,000 miles or 40-60,000 mile range. That's a sample of about 20-30 axles. Mostly W123's.

I replaced both axleshafts in December 2002. I got 5K miles out of one of them before it went bad, and replaced it under warranty; it's got 10K miles on it now and no problems. The other is still going strong after a total of 15K miles.

Both were CarQuest axles, and given the price and the fact that they have a lifetime waranty, I'm not complaining...

As long as Carquest doesn't get bought out by another parts house, you should be OK. I got screwed on a so called "lifetime" warranty when Schmucks bought out Trak Auto. They wouldn't honor any of them.

CarQuest has been around longer than I can remember, while they aren't real popular with the general public around here a lot of shops use them for parts.

Come to think of it you're right, they have been around for quite some time, a lot longer than some of those big chain store, except for maybe NAPA and Pep Boys.
