123 blower motor r&r

Did a search on this, many threads, but most deal with fuses and none really conclude how the job is done, so:

Is there a reasonably concise description of how to get to and repair/replace the 123 blower motor?

The blower in my 84 300TD is coming on intermittently (seems like some kind of switch or power problem/loose something or other?) and I would much rather do this job myself.

I am HOPING that this job is NOWHERE near as involved as the blowers on the old 108 and 115 cars!

Thanks,

JAS

Blower is cake, but the cycling is probably the monovalve.

Blower: Remove three screw facia's from passenger kick panel.

Unscrew the three phillips head retaining screws.

Unscrew plastic retaining screw on the lower right side of panel by 1/4 turn, then pull towards the rear to disengage it from the panel.

Pull panel towards the rear and bend to dislodge the retain lips at the rear and sides.

Once panel is removed, you'll see the fan housing on the right under the dash. There are three or four phil head screws that hold the blower into the housing. Once the screws are all removed (un-plug the two cond plug before it's unscrewed), the blower assy should drop free below.

While you're at it, you might check the blower controller (black plastic box behind the glove box) by swapping in a junkyard part and see if that's the problem, but I suspect the monovalve is blown or something is telling the clime control to cycle.

Have you re-soldered the clime cont'l unit yet?

BTW, sometimes it's easier to just get a junkyard blower instead of replacing the brushes, but it can be done if it needs them (most that I've taken apart that needed brushes also had a destroyed armature so brushes would be just a temp fix for them.)

Good luck.

Awesome, Thanks!

I will get in there and do this myself, no prob.

But, what do you mean about re-soldering the climate control unit?

I truly wish these cars had the euro style manual knob set-up, but thatmight be asking for too much (or too little, as it were...)

Thanks again,

JAS

The blower in my 84 300D was intermittent. I removed the panel to expose the blower and with the blower switch turned on I could give the motor a "love" tap and it would come on for a few seconds or a few minutes (there was no connection to the amount of "love" and the running time!). The brushes were worn too short, tapping them would get just enough connection to get the motor running. $9.00 and a little solder and its running great now! A very easy job!

I've taken the motor out (very easy indeed, what a tidy little design- they must have learned from the earlier 114/108's etc how NOT to design these...)

So, where can I buy the brushes? Are they an auto part store item, or the hardware store? Where'd you get your replacements ak300td?

I'm just back from two and a half weeks mushing in the backcountry, hope this comes in time to help...

I got my replacements at a local electrical motor repair shop. The kind that has two of everyting that can be found in one pile or another somewhere in the joint. They were not a perfect fit, and they assured me the armature was so worn that the motor would fail again in a couple of weeks, but it was -20* and it didn't matter. The motor has worked fine for a month and a half so we'll see.

The shop keep said that the armature in the motor was so grooved that it would just grind away at the new brushed every time the motor came on. Many motors can have the armature turned on a lathe and smoothed out, but unfortunately ours have been assembled in a way that makes it difficult (impossible?) to take the motor apart and reassemble it later.

Good luck!

Thanks.

I ended up just ordering a set of brushes from george murphy- 23 bucks shipped. Still better than 160 for a new motor.

When they arrive, I'll pop 'em in and fire it up. The armature is admittedly a bit worn, with some grooves, but like you said, there's no way to disassemble it. So, we'll try the set of brushes, see how long I can make it last, before having to drop the $ for a whole new motor.

At least when that happens, it takes five minutes to change out.

(I am so conditioned to the horror of doing blower motors on the older 108's and similar, that just the mention of blower motors going bad scares the daylights out of me.) Happily, M-B wised up with the 123 blower placement.

Thanks again,

JAS

It's all about supply and demand, spo...

There are none that even come close to matching these in my area, and I've checked every hardware store, electrical supply place, electric motor repair shops, etc. At this point, 23 bucks seems, to me, CHEAP!

Hey, where are you on the no. shore? I was born in Beverly, grew up in Ipswich-

conclusion

Got the brushes from George Murphy, put it back together, works beautifully. Somehow, now even the center vents are functioning with the a/c on. Perhaps there wasn't enough airflow before when the blower was on its last legs?

Who knows.

Works great now.
