Driving / Fog Lights

I came across a pair of Lumax 6 Volt bumper-mount driving/ fog lights. These are vintage 1972 but new and in the box. Apparently it depends on the bulb whether they are driving / fog lights.

I have poor night vision but I do not want to make it unsafe for oncoming cars either.

Is there any point to installing these on my '81 300TD? I think that they would look cool, but don't know if they'd make a big difference...

Anybody out there have any of these mounted?
If they are marked "6V" can I even use them on my car or are they only for a 6V system?

6 volt in a 12 volt sys?

Your 12 volt system should burn out those lights pretty quick.
Don't bother. Just my humble opinion.

ps: Was there any applications listed for those lights?
I'm not aware of any 6v vehicles after the early 60's or earlier.

Anyone know for sure?

I know more now...

I examined the paperwork that came with them.
I can put 12V bulbs in them and they will work fine.

They were made in England originally. They'd probably be great on a vintage MGB or something that was still 6V.

I should probably just replace the lamps in the car now for better light, one is cracked anyway.

Sounds good.

I doubt it's a problem, but make sure that they are neg ground,
not positive.

My Packard is 6v positive ground. Just try to find accessories for that!

Lightbulb lights

For increased night time visibility, replace your headlamps with Sylvania Silver Stars ... http://www.sylvania.com/star A friend of mine did this in his 300D, and it made a huge difference, both in color temperature and light output. Also, replace the lamps in your factory fog lamps, as they tend to get gray with age, reducing their output.

With new headlamps and fog lamps, your visibility should be greatly increased. I don't think you'll need to install a secondary set of fog/driving lamps, but that's up to you. Fog lamps are easier on the eyes of oncoming traffic because the beam spread is intended to be close to the ground, often below the level of your low beam headlamps. OTOH, driving lamps are intended to be used with your high beams, as they provide projected beams of light that often illuminate the road up to several hundred feet in front of you.

the lens pattern is what determines which type it is.

example, a virtually clear/see thru lens is driving or pencil beam-a long distance light.

a lens which is heavily fluted or has many ridges/ can't see thru is a fog light. the lens puts out a short but very broad pattern.

if you have a w123, you can buy some new h4 7"round lights. you can buy 5 3/4" h1-high beam or 5 3/4" fog light.

you should be able to upgrade fairly inexpensively.
