Angry smoke from my diesle at high RPM

I have an 87 300 td wagon i bought 3 months ago. I switched to delvac 1, i notice when i first start it there is a puff of smoke and an oily smell but its gone almost immediately. I notice when i drive it, it shifts from 1 to 2nd gear at about 3000 rpm and 2nd to 3rd at about 3500 to 4000 rpm, of course I can make it shift much sooner and smoother if i just let up on the gas a bit to cause the gear to engage, but if i am bearing down on it it is a rought shift , i dont know if thats normal. I see a cloud of dark smoke in the rear view mirrow when the rpm is approachhing its high but once it shifts its gone, the smoke only happens sometimes at higher rpms.....what is this?

A bit of black smoke is normal under heavy acceleration. If it's really bad, you might want to try a fuel additive, injector cleaner, or adjust your ALDA. White/blue smoke is indicative of oil burning, either from the turbo, rings, or valve stem seals. White smoke on startup is also normal, as long as it goes away fairly quickly (20 seconds or so).

603 blue smoke

My '87 300d (603) also puts out blue smoke at startup. I recently replaced GP's and cleaned the interior of the intake manifold and crossover pipe. This eliminated the blue cloud for awhile, but it returned once the manifold got oily again. Reading old threads on this topic seems to point to turbo lubrication leaks or valve stem blowby as the source of the oiliness. Am not sure how to isolate the source.

It is also possible that you simply have soot build up in your muffler and the high rpms and hard shifting are just blowing it out a bit. My car had some exhaust leaks when I bought it and when repaired, the first 20 times I did a hard acceleration, the biggest, blackest cloud of smoke came out of the exhaust. I was worried enough to call the repair shop who told me what was going on. Sure enough, it went away after the system stablilized.
