The sensor uses the flywheel teeth.

77 240D manual into 84 300TD?

So after reading through this post it still seems unclear.... is putting a 1977 240D 4 speed manual trans into an 84 300TD a reasonable conversion?
I have both cars (and all associated parts)
Thanks,
-Rob

It is a reasonable thing to do. I have done at least four and paid my indie to do all four of them. They charged about five hundred or so labor last time. With the parts and all it cost only about 12 or 1300 iirc. Less than or equal to having the automatic rebuilt.

For my money a much better way to go.

Well since the last posting on this thread, I installed the 4-spd in my 85 300D.

I used the adaptor plate that was used for the automatic with the 4-spd
and clutch assembly.

since the 84 and 85 use the sensor on the flywheel for the tach pickup, I
was hopeing the tach would work with the manual flywheel, and it does.

swaping everything over is pretty much plug and play. except for cutting
and balancing the DL and match balancing the FW.

Good Show, you'll be doing some happy motoring What about the pilot bearing? Isn't it a different size on the 85?

The pilot bearing is a different size. I lucked out with the new engine, metric Motors used a pre 85 crank. so the standard pilot bearing slipped right in. I was sweating on that one.

I guess the alernative would be making a bushing out of bronze.

I have about 10,000 miles since the conversion, has been great. milage
went up 2 1/2 to 3mpg. my last tank was 31.94.

that gets me to wondering about the pilot bearing in my Euro 85, 240D. Is it that "odd ball' size, if I someday have to replace it , Actually the clutch and associated parts will probably out live me.

That manual tranny should have been an option back in the 80s, sounds like its working out very nice.

My 300D being an 85, has the 2:88 Diff. which helps some.
My speedometer seems to run slow. Checking with the spedometer check signs that Oregon has in several placed on I-5, in 5 miles the odo is slow by 4 10ths.

I also used the tire calculator www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html .
I punched in the 195-70-14 and then 205-70-14. It shows the 205 larger and turning 2.2% slower.

so does that mean my 31.94 is actually 32.64mpg? .

well what ever it is, Iam happy with it.
that milage was I-5 from Cottage Grove, Or to Lathrop, Ca. 503 miles.

Iam on the hunt for the elusive 5-spd and 300D flywheel.
