Unhappy 1985 TD /none starting

HELLO FELLOW BENZ LOVERS,

I AM IN A BIG JAM, MY 85TD WAS NOT SHUTING OFF,I REPLACED THE VACUM CONTROL ON THE REAR OF THE INJECTION PUMP,THE ENGINE STARTED IN WIDE OPEN THROTTLE, I PUSHED THE SHUTOFF CONTROL NOTHING HAPPENED, THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING HOT BLACK SMOKE COMING OUT LIKE A FRIEGHT TRAIN, I PANICKED AND PULLED THE RUBBER HOSE LOSE TO THE FUEL FILTER IT STOPED INSTANTLY, I FOUND PEICES OF MY TURBINE WHEEL BEHIND THE TAIL PIPE ON THE TO HOT TO PICK UP, I TOOK THE TURBO AN FOUND THAT THE REAR TURBINE BLADE HAD SHEARED OFF AN WENT THROUGH MY EXHAUST, I CHANGED THE OIL AN INSTALLED A NEW INJECTOR AFTER SETTING TO ENGINE 24BTC AN SETTING THE TIMING MARKS ON THE INJECTOR, I WANT TO GET IT STARTED BEFORE REPLACING THE TURBO, BUT IT HASN'T STARTED, DOES A NON WORKING TURBO PREVENT STARTING OR MAYBE THE VACUM LINES ARE NOT INSTALLED CORECTLY, IS THERE ANY HOPE FOR TIRED BENZ OWNER.

A turbo is driven by exhaust gases. It will not affect the engine starting. How long it is run with a destroyed turbo is the question. Clearly it should NOT be started with a bad turbo or nothing connected to the manifolds unless you NEED to. Running bare manifolds may let objects get sucked into the intake (i.e. MORE damage), running with a blown turbo may let turbo parts enter the engine (I.E. ENGINE DEATH!).

Did you check the compressor wheel to see if it's damaged? Yanking off the fuel line may just mean there is air in the system that needs to be bled out be "cracking" open the injector lines and cranking until fuel comes out all 5 lines.

What Bill said.

How long did the engine run away for before you pulled off the fuel line? If she ran for more than 5 seconds, I'd be real concerned...and if any longer than 10 seconds, I'd start preparing to either get another engine or part the car out.

OTOH, you killed it on your own and there apparently wasn't an explosion (which is the typical result of runaway engines that aren't killed in time), so you may be safe. I wouldn't count on that, though.

As Bill said, get the shutoff valve put in properly before even thinking about lighting the engine off. And this time, I'd have a wrench handy to disconnect the metal injector lines from the injectors, along with a board to put over the turno inlet to cut the air off (and a second person to man the board)...

Good luck! I would venture to guess that it's time for a new turbo too...

That's quite a feat considering there are two mufflers and about 1/2 dozen bends in the tubing before you even get to the tailpipe.

Just a side thought...

It's PITA to even reach the shutoff actuator, even more so next to a hot oil filter housing on a warm engine. If it blew out chunks of the turbo that were still too hot to touch, it must have ran away VERY high, for a long time, or was WAY over fueled. I have a feeling you might need more than a new turbo or fresh oil. To be safe, if it were me, I would take off the head to make sure there is no debris in the combustion chamber or damage to the surfaces. If it went over 5K rpm you might have a balooned torqe converter (Can that happen when not in gear?)

HELLO AGAIN,
I'VE ALSO TAKEN OTHER STEPS TO INSURE THAT MY ENGINE DOES NOT GET FURTHER DAMAGE , I REMOVED THE TURBO AND CHECKED INSIDE THE MANIFOLD TO LOOK FOR ANY PARTS TINY ARE LARGE. BUT THE TURBO HAD A LOT OF METAL BITS I CLEANED IT OF ALL THRASH AND BOLTED IT BACK TO THE ENGINE. SO THAT IF IT STARTED THE ENGINE I WOULDN'T MAKE THINGS WORSE. AFTER DOING A LOT OF RESEARCH, I REALIZED THAT I HAD BEEN SETTING THE TIMING WRONG, ITS CONFUSING AT FIRST FINDING A CLEAR WAY TO DETERMINE WERE 24 BTDC EXACTLY IS. I FINALY REALISED THAT FACING THE ENGINE ITS BEFORE THE DAMPER REACHES ZERO ,AND THAT THE IP HAD TO BE REMOVED AGAIN AND THE TIMING MARKS SET ON IT ALSO
I UNDERSTAND THAT AFTER A RUNNAY ENGINE IF IT DOES NOT BLOW UP YOU MUST BE CONCERED ABOUT A SEIZED ENGINE , I'VE ATTEMPED TO START THE ENGINE IT ROTATES WELL SO I THINK I'M OK THERE.
NOW I'M IN THE PROCESS OF RECONNECTING ALL FITTING AND VACUM LINES,MY START OF DELEVERY WITH THE IP THAT I'M UNSURE ABOUT I DON'T KNOW IF WITH ALL OTHER THING BEING RITH THAT BEING OFF COULD PREVENT IT FROM STARTING, THE MB BODY LOOKS GREAT I'VE ALWAYS KEPT IT WASHED AND WAXED. I'LL KEEP EVERYONE POSTED ON MY PROGRESS.
JESSE THE NONE STARTING 85TD.

I don't know the answers to Jesse James question, but I do know he has resolved a long standing debate on this board.

With runaway engines, people have suggested keeping a wrench handy to loosen the injection lines or blocking the intake. Someone (it might have been me) suggested that cutting the fuel line would also shut off the engine. Others disagreed, saying that the fuel in big filter would allow the engine to continue running. I thought that the lack of incoming fuel would stop the outflow of fuel. It looks like it does.

We need only a clear statement from Jesse about how long the engine ran once the fuel line was removed.

JESSE'S RUNAWAY MBTD

HELLO,

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION,IT TOOK ABOUT 1 TO 2 SECONDS, AFTER I PULLED THE FUEL RUBBER FUEL LINE FROM THE FILTER THAT INTERS THE IP, I MUST ADVISE BE SURE TO HAVE A POCKET KNIFE HANDY, BECAUSE THE RUBBER HOSE CAN SURPRISE YOU WHEN IT STRECHES ,I KEPT MINE TIGHT TO PREVENT AIR LEAKS AND YOU MUST PULL VERY HARD TO GET LOSE IN A SPLIT SECOND.
JESSE THE OWNER OF A WHITE RUNNAY MBTD.

Just a thought

It's never a good idea to reinstall a damaged part onto an engine. Even more so on a high speed/precision device that NEEDS to be carefully, if not, perfectly balanced.

Although 1-2 second might not seem like much, but would the air entering the IP cause any damage to the innards, mainly on the plunger sleeves?

jesse james jet: Just a side thought. It might be a good idea to turn off the caps lock. All caps in internet language is translated as yelling. It's also harder to read and focus on. In my opinion, I think all lowercase would be better than all caps. No offence to you, just helping out.

There's a used turbo for sale on Ebay right now, cheap. Do a search on Mercedes diesel turbo and it should come up.
