Skid plate for 300SDL

Where can I buy a strong skid plate for my 300 SDL? I have one for my -85 SD, but would like to attach one to my -86 SDL as well.

Sincerely

Anders

If you are talking about the plastic one covering the bottom of the engine bay, it's not that strong... but, I found one on eBay. Bought it and the guy's wife promptly threw it out before he could ship it to me.

I'm still looking. I also need one for an '86 300SDL.

I believe they are there for sound abatement and to help create a low pressure area in the bay to help cooling.

Not the plastic one. I am looking for a stainless steel one. Something that will protect the oil pan (and indirectly the engine) if you hit something while driving.

Putting a metal skid plate mite make the engine sounds louder in the car. I wonder what you could use to insulate it?

Looking at the EPC it appears that part # 126 520 00 42, the skid plate, is only for the 617 engine 300SD 1981-1985. The electronic parts catalog states "not for this model application" when pulling up the skid plate for the 300SDL '86. It would seem that ony the sound encapsulation panel is available for your '86, at least from MB. I'm sure that an off-road shop could fabricate one using your 300SD one as a guide.

I'd just use a foam of some sort, eventually it'll be soaked in oil and a mess so I wouldn't want anything very compactable. (I wonder if something like dynamat would help, at least it'd be easy to clean up)

I would like to make one of these for my 123 mainly for easier winter starts. It wouldn't matter if it were windy outside or not the motor would always act like it was parked indoors which would make shorter plug-in times and it would stay warmer longer. Also for aerodyanmics it would have to help a little bit.

ke6dcj (senior ShopForum member) had a skid plate made up for the bottom front of a 300 wagon (W124?) he drove in SF. He is now in FL I believe. It might be fruitful to search for his posts, or send him PM. He had pictures on his website but I can't locate it.
You are going to have to attach such a plate securely yet be able to remove it for service. Maybe threaded inserts in the chassis are the way to go, that is worth looking at.

He must have changed his website around a little bit because I don't see it. I just wonder where MB stops the plate, shortly after the motor or past the steering linkages?!
