glow plugs

i 'secured' some new glow plugs.. i know a big step here but have a question -
can anyone verify that these are the right plugs for a 5cyl 617 engine :

bosch glow plug
part no. 80006
0 250 201 039-35T

also noticed that on the actual plugs it is stamped 'france' as in made in...
what's with that - will my car crave garlic in the fuel now ??

Yep, that's the right #, but there were two different designs with that P/N. One had a straight tip and the other had a tapered tip. Both should work the same.

Thumbs up success but my back hurts!

replaced all 5 glow plugs. was able to get the first 3 in without removing injector lines. last 2 no way .. removed the lines and it was still kinda tough to get in there but managed it. total time 2.5 hrs.
the old ones were heavily carboned up, and a couple had pitted tips.
replaced them all due to they were 9 years old, and had some cold start problems.

for info the glow plugs are 12mm and the little nuts that attach the wires to the plugs are 8mm. injector lines are 17mm.

if i had the job to do over i would have removed all the injector lines first.

I managed to get all the GP's out without pulling the injector lines on mine when I changed them several months back. It was a big PIA but not impossible nor did it take 2.5 hours to do and it was the first time I ever did it. It only took me about 1.5 hours with losing a couple of the nuts, trying to find them again and "bench testing" the old GP's included. 84300DT, please don't get the idea I'm saying you did something wrong here. I'm just sharing my experience. I had a small starting problem as well but changing the GP's didn't help. In fact the old GP's were still good and I guess I changed them for nothing. It still misses and I have to hold the accelerator pedal until it warms up. I'm looking into new injectors at this point.

Question

84300DT, did you check the resistance of the old plugs by any chance? I'm just curious to know what condition they were in.

I'm just wondering if the tapered design glow plug is made that way to burn out quicker?

last time i checked , which was a couple of years ago, they did check ok.
i wasn't getting any flashing , etc from the glow plug light on the dash, although it was staying on a lot longer than usual recently..

then again they were 9 years old...
so i believe that they were losing some efficency. also as i said they were carboned up and a couple of the tips were pitted.

i know peh would probably think that replacing all 5 was unnecessary.. but the car was not starting on all cylinders so i thought replacement was indicated.
plus, this job is a real PIA in my opinion so if i only have to do it once every nine years i'm happy !!

oh, i did keep the old ones as spares .. it might be interesting to hook them up to a power source to see how well / if they glow.
