Are these the signs that my starter is going ???

Hey,

My starter makes "whizzzzing" noises right when the car starts (seems like it just keeps spinning). Today it went over board and wasn't even cranking for a few seconds but spinning (whizzzzzing sounds).... I'm getting scared that the starter might go soon especially after this damn harsh winter....I do have a 240D with 173k miles (1983)

My few questions......
1. How do I know my starter is going?
2. Will a bigger starter fit my car? Heard that a 300d might fit
3. Tough job to do? special tools etc..
4. Common part to brake at this age and mileage?

Thank You Very Much For Your Help
I really do appreciate your guys' help

The Starter Solenoid is located atop the starter body on all the early to mid 80's 240D's. This is also true of most of the 300D's and 300D turbos, except Calif models where it might be on the underside. Starters for 300D turbo will fit the 240D's and are either faster spinners, or higher power motors. At any rate are probably a better motor than a stock 240D starter.

Hey,

I found a BOSCH Starter Solenoid on this website for 23 bucks... is that how cheap they are ? https://www.********.com/dbphp/dbpage/prt/23/31035/Froogle

Are the solenoids easy to install or would I need all types of special toools ??

Thank You
