help for new owner
hi, i am new to this forum because i recently bought a 1983 240d. it has 170k on it and according to my local mercedes wizard, seems to be pretty solid throughout. I usually do basic maintence myself, but had the shop do my first oil and filter. They told me that they always use quakerstate 5w-40 synthetic on thier diesels. The strange thing is that none of the local auto parts stores seem to carry it!! should i use something else? what about synthetic or not synthetic? The previous owner did not use synthetic.

At the top of the forum there are " sticky" posts... read the one about using the search.... then search for ' oil' , etc..... way too much posted on this to start over...

Welcome aboard 83grey240d! Most people are usually eager to help if they can around here, but you just happened to ask a question that has been beaten to death on this forum. Use the search like leather suggested and you will come up with more information than you ever wanted to know about oil. I, for one, like to see pics of peoples new acquisitions if you don't mind posting a couple. I hope you like your "new" car.

83grey,
Does the Quaker State (QS) synthetic oil have C rating. This means compression ignition I.E. DIesel. It will be printed on the containers the oil comes on inside a circle.. I never used QS bcause I didn't think it had a C rating, but I may be wrong. If it doesn't have the C rating it may not have the proper additives to control the soot that gets past the rings in a Diesel engine. I suggest you use a synthetic oil if the engines doesn't use much oil but make sure the brand you use has the C rating. Delvac 1 is probably the best but hard to find so Mobil1 is a good substutute. Castrol Syntec and Shell Rotella Synthetic are also good. There is also Amsoil and Redline but they are more expensive. P E H |

OK, Another lesson on this board... when you arrive click on ' usercp' .... this will give you any private messages which you have been sent..... particularly if you do not list your email as a way of contacting you....
In this case , at the same time I posted above, I sent you a pm with what I use for oil .... If I had put that INTO the post then others would have felt obligated to say what they use... and viola ! Another OIL THREAD.... |

Rick,
I always saw Amsoil at car shows, etc. and there it was more expensive. Where did you order the DIesel Amsoil from? At that price, I'll get some myself. P E H |

Greg, I really was torn about whether to post that or not. But felt compelled to contradict misconception with fact. That's what we're all about here, even if it involves oil!

Here's my question then. If oil threads are obviously so popular, why not start one be-all and end-all oil thread, and sticky it? Then the people who don't care about oil arguments don't have to be bothered, newbies can easily find the answers to their oil questions, and those who are gung ho for oil have an outlet.
That's my opinion on the matter.
