Completely different engine and different vehicle. This entire thread does not apply to you.

The glow plugs on the 617 do not typically present any difficulty in removal.

I doubt it. Do you have the pencil thin GPs? I think not.

The OM606 (1995-99) uses long, thin pencil type plugs.

The late OM616/617's (1980's) use the short, thin pencil type plugs (ditto for all OM601, 602, 603).

The older OM61x engines (up to around 1980?) use the short, fat, series, loop-style plugs which are awful... these can be retrofitted to the pencil type, I believe.

Reamer Procedure

Hello,

Has anyone reamed thier glow plug holes when doing this procedure? Any guidence that could be added to this procedure? I asked the dealer about the reamer and they said it was part of a $600 kit. Does anyone know the size so I could get it somewhere else? How do you prevent the crud from falling into the prechamber and how do you prevent scratching the metal and creating metal chips? Is it undersized?

Thanks,
Jay

You can find the reamer under the special tools link above. It is ~$140.

Read up on 606 GP's and make an informed decision whether you want to remove them or not. They have a habit of seizing and snapping off.

You guys must be looking at the wrong part or place. I have the reamer, it cost maybe $20 from Phil. As far as using it, you just stick it in the chamber and twist it etc to break up/remove the carbon..which will be burned away in the engine.. It's a good idea, as well as anti-seize to keep them from sticking in the head.

Can you post the part number. The 606 MB reamers I've seen are all much more expensive, although not $600; that is probably for the broken GP removal kit.

I don't know if they have a website, but the item is from Baum Tools, and it's part number #B606-0053 . Their phone number is 800-848-6657, but I believe I ordered it thru Phil from this site. Hope that helps

Anti-seize and socket

Thanks,

I'll call phil and get a quote. I need some other stuff as well. Do you put the anti-seize on just the threads or the some of the body? Do you use a specific brand and part number of anti-seize? Will it be bad if that stuff gets into the prechamber?

Does anyone have a socket prefference to remove the glow plugs? Would a snap-on socket that grabs the flat part be better than the standard hex socket? I think I heard it was a 12 mm deep socket, correct?.

Thanks,
Jay

I've got the reamer, all the necessary sockets and the correct tap should you need that. Contact me off list if you want to rent/borrow them.
