air cleaner broke?
I developed a rattle from the area around my 300d's air cleaner. Upon removing, I discovered a tube that is disconnected from the oil recovery (blowby) canister. How does this tube join with it? I am including pictures of each as I think something my have broke away from the air cleaner itself.
First picture shows the air cleaner removed and the tube just sitting there.

Yep. It's done broke.
I'll be out at the junkyard tomorrow afternoon or Monday and try to procure one for you. If you have a pull it yourself type yard around, hit it. You DON'T want to pay dealer prices!

Does the whole air cleaner assembly need replacing?
I just came back from the hardware store to see if any of the plumbing fittings could retrofit. Bought a 3/4 inch copper tube about 1 inch long but won't work. Was thinking of brazing this to the bottom of the assembly but 3/4 is too large to fit inside the tube in picture #1. Other ideas? Nope, no wrecking yards in the Portland area I am aware of that carry vehicles this old ('84) for mercedes.

I see no reason you could adapt as you're talking about.
But if that doesn't work, try these guys up in N. Seattle: http://www.auroraaw.com/ They'll ship parts to you.

Lots of MB's of that era in yards around here. Been meaning to procure another one to have myself anyway, so I'll get what I can early next week and LYK.

Thanks all for the offers. I think I fixed it though. Found an aluminum tube in my shop that fit nicely into the 'downspout'. Ended up using some JB Weld to fasten it on and it looks and feels very strong. Mounted back onto car good as new...

Looks great!
Remember, the original "nipple" has an O-ring groove in it to keep oil from seeping out and keep dust and crap from getting into the oil pan. You might find a thick CS O-ring that will fit snug on the OD of you new tube and in the ID of the drain tube to the oil pan.
