Trans to short or drive shaft to short?
Hi,
I need help with a 300 SD, 82. The problem is that there is 2 1/4 inch space between the trans flange and the drive shaft flange. The flex plate is about 1 inch thick, so there is a 1 1/4 inch difference. Can the drive shaft be adjusted in or out? I don't know if this is a different trans or different drive shaft, but it's in the car now and everything matches up except the length. please help if you can. Thanks Greg |

How long is your driveshaft? I have a longer one that came off my 240 that's in fine shape... let me know if you're interested, and I'll measure it for you. I had to buy a short one for my 240-300 conversion, and I'd be willing to sell the short one. Cheers.

Ah the dream. While I enjoy the Old Lady ('79 300SD) she could sure use a little help in the gears. Please post the final $ of the swap.

Auto-to-Manual Tranny Swap for '87 300D ???
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum here. I've got an '84 300D with a swapped-in stickshift. I love it, but I'm considering buying an '87 300D. It's a peppier car, with a six-cylinder engine. I'm wondering if a stickshift could go into this car as well as it goes into the 123. Any comments on this possibility are appreciated--as well as general comments about how the two models compare. I don't see why it can't be done. You would have to get the manual bits from a W201 (190D). It would be a bit more work to transfer everything W201-W124 than W123-W123.
On the up side, 5-speeds are commonly available since the starter is on the left. |

Lance is correct, it can be done, you'll just need the 124 manual parts (I had a pedal assy, shifter and 5-speed trans out of an '87, but sold for a little of nothing on ebay.

It's quite a strange world the one we live in.
Across the big pond, here in Albania, South Europe, people pay around $600 to swap from manual to automatic. Everyone wants comfort and being stuck for an hour in a traffic jam is not really a lot of fun, especially if you have to mess with the clutch/brake balance. How much do these manual transitions weight and I wonder how much would cost to send a couple across the pond. Here they can be found at around $100 each.

Even if I did, though, it's piqued my interest, and I was thinking maybe my best bet, financially, would be to come across an '87 300D with a shot transmission. I figure, if the transmission is bad, the car would sell for less and I could make up the difference customizing it. -S |

That was ~$100 for the transmission of a om602.
I doubt we have 123 with 5sp here. All but one that I've seen so far are 4sp, and we used to have loads of them here in Albania.

300d with 190d transmission
I have an 81' 300d I would love to put a manual transmission in. This may sound odd as I'm not sure about the differences between the 240 and 190 but I just had to put a used transmission in it and it came out of an 84' 190d (only time I've seen that attempted). It bolted up perfectly other than the dipstick tube and the kick down cable (not present on the original) needing some "adjustments" to fit. It has been running fine for a few months and even has better get up and go than it did before. However it recently started to go directly into 4th from dead stops unless it is manually shifted. Any help with that would be appreciated but I only mention it because it makes me curious if a 190d manual would work in this car. The current shift pattern is identical to the previous transmission. I'm having trouble finding any info on the conversion of a non-turbo model so any ideas of what model would make the best replacement are welcome.

I don't see how it's possible for you to have mounted a 190D tranny onto a 240D. The starter humps are on opposite sides of the engines and it's a different bolt pattern.
