diesels are dirty

"Green", neighbor; cursed me out for buying a dirty diesel!!!
She drives a Caddilac Esclade!!! LOL
Do you get this type of BS.
I think it has more to do with waking her up every morning; with the lovely clatter of diesel, told her to close her window if it bothers her. LOL

She seriously had the gall to talk junk when she drives a monster SUV?!

Unbelievable.

I've heard nothing negative about the 300D since I've had it, it almost never smokes really visably.

The VW's.. Ahh, I've had a few unplesant instances. More from people anoyed personaly with black smoke and soot on there cars than from any misguided care for the enviroment.

Dump some used engine oil in the fuel tank and give that hypocritical snob something to really ponder next time you crank up.

Around here, it looks (and sounds) like a Greyhound terminal when SWMBO and I fire off on a cold morning. Klatta, Klatta, Klatta....

Whunter.

Tell her to buy a Toyota Prius and to shut-up.

Some people are idiots.
Just like the ones that set fire to those cars
in that CA dealership.
They caused more polution with the fire than
what those suv' could put out in a year.
And most likely they where driven there with
a gas guzzeling Ford/Chevy extended van.

If only those people could see how stupid
they really are.

Louis.

Diesel emissions mostly soot, according to

what I've read. MUCH cleaner than most conventional gas engines...but this "particulate", even tho it soon settles to earth as opposed to rising into the atmosphere (along with the stink) give diesels an undeserved bad name.

I'd like to see posts on the environmental impact of gas vs. diesel.

Jim, do a search, this has been discussed before. But the summary is basically like this. The average gasoline engine puts out more CO2, CO (the most toxic of all), hydrocarbons, and super-tiny particulates. The average diesel puts out more NOx and larger (but still tiny) particulates, those that we sometimes see as black smoke. I conclude from this that diesels are better for the environment. That woman is a totally brainless and rude moron. It's stupid enough to drive an SUV, it's a lot worse to think it's environmentally better than diesel passenger cars.

YEP!!!

In fact, not sure about a CDi, but I think that it could be successfully argued that a Volkswagen TDi has less of an overall environmental impact than even a hybrid car (due to issues with disposing of the hybrid's batteries when the car's used-up).

As to conventional g@$$ers...take a look at my "Why are diesels better?" article to get my stance there.

So I wonder what she would say to me since I run on renewable fuel. Probably be madder since what little veggie that gets purged into the diesel tank makes start-ups smell a little goofy. Once hot, the veggie exhaust smells better than diesel, but not so much on a cold start.

Damned good thing she doesn't live next to me. My work truck has a 4" exhaust pipe and a "muffler" that not only can you see straight through, you could almost stick your fist through. On a morning when the cold idle advance is at full the injectors sound like 8 really pissed dwarves smacking a 55gallon drum with hammers. Between the exhaust pulses reverberating and hte injector clatter she would be driven mad in a week or less. I suppose she could complain but I sure wouldn't hear her! Some people are incurable idiots when it comes to diesels. Let 'em stay that way... More for us! RT

Thumbs up

The Warden's "Why Diesel's Are Better Article" is fantastic! Give it a read.

I actually own both an SUV and a 300D. I often get compliments for the M-B and sometimes get nasty notes left on the SUV because I take up too much space between the lines in a parking lot.
I mainly have the SUV so I can go on long trips comfortably (it also has a working cruise control) and I can carry way more gear and people than the 300D. I also can go longer between fill-ups than the 300D but that's only because the SUV has a bigger tank. The fuel economy is not that much worse on the hwy with the SUV. I get 20 MPG's (Honest!) on the hwy with the SUV and I barely get over 22 MPG's with the 300D. With combined city/hwy driving the SUV's MPG's drop to around 17.5 where as the 300D's MPG's hover around 21.5.
I also need the SUV in the winter when we get snow since it has four-wheel drive. The 300D gets stuck too easily or just plain won't go anywhere in the snow we get.
I can justify owning the SUV.

lietuviai, I take your post as an indirect response to mine. I probably shouldn't have said that it's stupid to drive an SUV, but the truth is most people who own them don't need them. They're only useful in hilly terrain where the roads are not always plowed or if you carry lots of cargo, otherwise they're quite useless IMO and all they do is create lots of pollution and endanger other drivers of lighter vehicles. I mean everyone's free to drive whatever they want and I respect that, I just don't like people like the one whunter encountered who make rude, uneducated comments.

DieselAddict, I wasn't trying to personally counter your statement that it is stupid to drive an SUV nor do I take any offense to it. Please don't feel I am trying make an attack on your post. I agree there are many arogant SUV drivers that have an attitude toward those who drive smaller cars. IMO any car can be a danger to another car if they are not driven responsibly. I like the visibilty that our SUV provides us and I feel much safer driving it while encountering the stupid SUV drivers that I have to share the road with. I know I don't own the roads and that's why I share them. I just wanted to make a point as to why I own one and also that the one I own is no more a threat to the environment than most other commonly driven vehicles.
