Kept running w/dead alt. & bat.

This is not a "how to fix it" story. My daughter pulled in the drive-way in her 300D after a four hour run from college. She announced, "Dad the car is broke." She said that first the CD player quit and then she noticed that the instrument panel, blinkers, and windows were dead also. She had two more hours to drive and luckily had the good sense to keep on truckin'. I found that the alternator was shot and have replaced it. But the point is, if she had been driving anything but her diesel, old Dad would have been fixing the car on the side of the road instead of in the driveway. But this good feature only applies to daytime driving.

Would it be wrong of me to point out that a gasser with a magneto will run with no alt or battery as well?

could not resist, sorry..

Not many cars out there with 1-cylinder weedeater or lawnmower engines.

That might be a car a 240D could beat! (With a tailwind)

Well I was thinking more along the lines of a Vertex mag, there real popular in serious racing motors. Been around for decades.
Neat and work well, but damn pricy. What's priceless is to hand one to someone and watch them touch the plug contacts and then spin the shaft, ZAP.
