Nailing question?

I just ran a can of LM diesel purge thru the 240D and what a difference. Nailing stopped and the engine sounded great.

When I put the fuel lines back on for a test spin, the nailing returned.

Any thoughts?

Had similar experience, although I'm not sure I'd call the sound in my car 'nailing'. It seems to me that the engine runs much quieter on purge.

Deisel Purge had a much higher cetane rating than normal diesel fuel.

If the nailing stops with the Purge and returns immediately, time to get the injectors checked -- opening pressure or pattern may be bad, and you need new nozzles.

Otherwise, it's compression check time.

Check chain stretch and injection timing, too.

WOW!!!!!!

I just changed out my injectors, oh baby, what a difference. I tried to change out just the 2 that I determined to be the cause of the nailing but the engine ran really rough. So, I changed out all 4 and what a difference. I know for sure I had 2 bad ones, perhaps 3. Seems like I gained a new motor with an extra piston. Lots of power, at least for a 240D. Smoke on start up is greatly diminished, it is much quieter, and lots more power. Need to find some fuel return hose to replace the old ones. I reused the old ones and got a few small leaks. Here's to another 200k of motoring with these new injectors.
