Window Regulators

Hey--I have searched on this topic, but still can't find the answers I need. Hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction...

I have an '84 300SD (W126). Window in question is rear driver side. Got the panel and plastic off ok. It's clear where the regulator (White plastic piece) has broken in two.

I see it slides out of the rail and the new one slides in--no problem.

Here's my dilemma(s):

1. There is a rivet at the end of the arm that does the lifting. How do I get attach this rivet to the regulator?

2. Do I need to remove the motor from the window to work on this? Someone told me I need to, but am unsure.

3. Does the motor just unplug?

IF the rear 126 is like the rear 123, you'll need to pull the window reg/motor as an assembly. They are held together by 3 Phillips machine screws.

There are also 3 bolts holding the ASSEMBLY onto the door frame (plus the the white plastic thing thats broke). There is a window repair kit avail from Fastlane and the dealer ($5.00?) that includes a new pin, plastic guide and a cheap a** fastener.

You'll need to drill out the old pin with the reg/motor out of the car. Having access to a drill press and good drill bits would help (a lot!).

If someone pipes up and says the 126 is different from the 123 then ignore my response.

Thanks for the good advice. I dont think mine came with the right fastener...I guess I can drill the old rivet out, but my regulator has no rive top if you will...

The new plastic piece should have the new rivet with it. You have to separate the plastic piece, install the rivet with 1/2 the plastic piece in place and peen it onto the regulator. Then you put the plastic piece back together, slide it in the window slide rail and then finish installing the regulator.

GoWolfPack: The package I got from the dealer looks just like the package that is listed @ Fastlane for the 123 chassis. I think this package will work on your 126. Its listed in the body mechanical section under "window regulator kit".

The part listed @ Fastlane for the "window regulator kit" for a 126 is different and looks like its just a partial of the 123 package. Call Phil @ Fastlane for help to see if the 123 package will work for your 126. This may be a catalog foul up.

If the genuine MB parts catalog gives the same number for each repair kit, you can order the 123 kit from Fastlane.

I did that job on the drivers front window on my 126 a few months ago. You definitely need to remove the whole motor/regulator assembly. THe new plastic piece needs to be separated in half, and then the rivet is inserted and hammered out and open to keep it in the regulator arm. TO do this, you need to support the base of the rivet while you are hammering, or you will break the plastic piece and have to reorder and start again. I used a stack of coins. THe drilling out of the first rivet wasn't too bad with a fairly powerful, hand held drill and a new bit. The rivet pounding takes some time to get flat and spread the right amount. Good luck, this is a DIY job, no problem!

You can get the old rivet out without a drill press if you use a dremel tool and grind the flange completely away. Then the rivet easily gets pushed out.

As others have mentioned, you MUST take the new plastic piece apart before installing it and peening over the soft steel. Otherwise, you WILL be ordering another plastic piece. I found that out the hard way.
