350SDL Injector Pump Leaking Engine Oil - MB Dealer Wants $600 To Fix?

My 350SDL has a bad engine oil leak from and around the injector pump. MB dealer wants 4.5 hours plus parts to remove it, replace leaking seals and reinstall it. This MB dealer does have some good tech's that don't mind working on the older diesels. With tax it will cost me about $600, is this a fair price for this job?

Thank you.

About the going rate -- same job will be less expensive at an independent because the charge less.

I would guess that either the pump to block seal or the bottom pump cover is leaking, and fixing either one requires removing the pump. Obviously, it has to come off for the pump to block gasket, but it's not possible to remove the bottom cover with the pump in place, so it has to come out for that, too.

I'd leave it unless the leak is so bad you have to add oil all the time, and wait until the IP has to come off for some other reason. If you cannot live with the leak, you will have to part with the cash.

It's leaking bad enough that I can't park in anybody's driveway when I visit them because of the puddle it leaves. Lousy design I guess, thanks MB....

I just did this job on my 300D 2.5 turbo. IMHO 4.5 hours total labor is a good deal - I spent at least a day doing mine. I'm not sure I could do it again in 4.5 hours.

I agree about bad design with respect to the pump leaking. It seems like all the 603 and 602 engines require a IP reseal every decade or so.

Suggestion
Ask how much would it be for a totally rebuilt pump?

psfred 03-20-2004 12:00 PM

$1200 to $2500 more, depending on pump source. The entire $600 charge is for the R&R of the pump.
