Battery Maintenance
 

I see in the owner's manual it mentions periodically checking the fluid level in the battery, and topping it off with water if it is too low.

I've never checked any sort of fluid levels in a battery before and I don't know what to do. Who can help me out here? I'm wondering if this is the reason my last battery exploded last summer. Maybe since it was so hot 100+ degrees or so for a sustained period, and dried out. Anyway, help would be appreciated.

some modern batteries are sealed so you don't / can't check or top them off.
easily determined by looking at the top of the battery.

Flip the plastic top off with a flat head screwdriver, add distilled water to the cells, preferably with one of those vacuum bulb things that let's you add the water to the cell gently so it doesn't splash. That's acid down there, so you don't want the water running over or splashing in your face. Fill each cell to the inner ring (not flash with the top of the battery. Replace top. And next time buy a maintenance free or gel battery. :D

when you are working on the battery for any reason - WEAR EYE PROTECTION!!!
don't risk your sight for a lousy battery.

If your battery has the "X" slots on the caps, use a coin to unscrew them. Add water on a warm day. The fluid will expand when it gets warm and may overflow. Also, you don't want any sparks while those caps are off. I check my batteries at the end of summer. Summer heat will cause more evaporation from the battery leaving it weak for the winter when you really need the power.
