Purge question

Hey,

Should you have the engine hot before purging? Will that help release the gunk?

Going to try it this week.

Thanks!

I have a question about purging. Do you HAVE to loosen the bolt on top of the fuel filter or can you just go straight to the hand pump?
Thanks
David

I have a 1975 300D which I assume has about the same system as yours. I purge my system by just using the hand pump. It wouldn't hurt to loosen the bolt on top of the fuel filter but I don't think it is necessary.

It may only work if you pour the purge into a jar, disconnect the fuel lines from the tank and put them into the jar so it will run on straight diesel purge. Pouring it into the tank and running it that way is a waste of diesel purge.

I didn't see anybody ask about putting it in the tank. But anyway, that is correct that you run it straight.

As for pouring it in a glass jar, I don't really think that is necessary. They want you to do that so you can see when it is about to run out and shut the engine down so it doesn't run out of fuel. But you can do that easily enough by running it straight out of the can and just watching for bubbles in the prefilter. You'll know when it starts sucking air.

I also purge without loosening the bolt on the filter. Just pump a couple times to fill the prefilter.
