from synthetic to mineral. change interval.
1992 300D.
I talked with a technician at 800 FOR MERCEDES. He said that I can change to synthetic oil , but I cannot switch back to mineral oil. I wonder why. He suggested to stick to the origianal factory recommended oil change interval (5000 miles. 2500 miles for "severe") even if I use synthetic. However, some people in this forum use synthetic oil with longer oil change interval. Are their engines OK? |

I doubt they would continue with their current oil-changing habits if they somehow knew they were damaging their engines. All I know is that the whole 3000 miles between changes is a myth spread by the oil and filter companies, but it doesn't hurt to change it that often, so I do it just for peace of mind.

It makes no difference. If you want to switch back to dino oil just do it. I've done it several times on several cars with no problems. Pure propaganda.

"...a customer came into a shop recently with a 300SD that had 350K miles on it, original head, etc. another living testament to the reliability of Mercedes diesels, and the mechanic said she (the owner) comes in like clockwork for her 3000 mile oil changes.
You can't argue with that!" Oh brother, another one. When are you guys going to get it through your head that this kind of info means absolutely nothing. I heard that she washes her car every week, so therefore, if you wash your car every week, you too can go 350kmiles. Correlation does not imply causality. Get it? Probably not. I think it's hopeless. 240Joe |
