Winter tips:

Tips for winter.
Block heater
Diesel #1
Mobil 1 syn. oil.
Anti gel treatment or fuel treatment.
Good starter, Die Hard International Battery, fresh glow plugs and no corrorsion on any of the cables.
May want to use WD-40,or Ether for starting fluid.{A little dab will do you.}
Spare fuel filters.
If the fuel gels you are in a world of hirt.
Tell you friend to check with Big Rig guys that operate up there they will have it dialed. And will probable say "don't turn it off."

Its only been a few months, but my 84 300d has been great! The coldest I've started her is -28* and I have only a semi-functional glow plug system. Actually the glow system may be non-functional, but she starts without any trouble at all.

Critical:
block heater
battery pad heater
engine oil pan heater
synthetic oil
good battery and starter

Just have the heaters plugged into a timer, give it 3 hours at the really cold temps, and it shouldn't be a problem.

Where's your friend up here?

be careful with ether, I have heard that it can melt the glow plugs so you can never get them out.

I cant get my block heater plug out, and I tried really hard. It wasnt worth it to me to run the block.

But what do you have ak300Td for these, what brands, where did you get them? I am mostly interested in the battery pad heater, I have never seen that.

block heater
battery pad heater
engine oil pan heater

The various pad heaters are available up here at any parts store, but I'll have to check a manufacturer name and get back to you...I didn't find any doing a quick google search.

Basically they are heating elements encapsulated in an orange rubber pad with a 110v cord sticking out. You use silicone gasket maker to glue them onto the oil pan and some people glue one onto the transmission as well. I have a 100 watt heater (about 6" x 6") on the oil pan that works very well. They are not thermostatically controlled, they just heat up when plugged in so using a timer is important for pad life and for the eletcric bill.

The battery version is much the same but it is a 60 watt heater and is larger (about the size of the battery). It sits under the battery and theoretically does not overheat the battery and cook it.

As I mentioned, with the block, oil pan and battery heater, I'm starting my 300d with what is probably a non-functional glow system. As soon as the weather warms up I'll fix the glow system, but last Wednesday it was -28*F so I may have to wait a while!
