how to extract oil for analysis? siphon failed
I bought siphon pump $1.99 at Pepboys.
It had 6 ft hose. I put the hose in the dip stick pipe. I placed pump low following the instruction. But I failed. The oil did not come out. |

Maybe the oil was too viscous, did you try it with engine warm?

Yes, I tried when the engine was warm. The oil was 10W 40.

Thread a thin string down the tube. Tie a cotton ball or small rag on the end that is just barely big enough to be pulled up the tube. Slide the tube into the oil to be samples. Wait a second for the swab to get soaked with oil, and then pull it out quickly. Be sure the outside end of the tube is lower, like at ground lever, than the engine end.
I think that you are pissing in to the wind though. Syphoning oil thought a tube small enough to go down a dipstick hole is a slow process on a good day. I would suggest cleaning the area around the pan drain plug very well. Use starting fluid or the like. Loosen the plug, put a clean container under it, then remove it just slightly for your sample. When I worked in the marine industry in the Middle East we used top sample all the engines frequently. We used Mobil Oil samplers that came with their own little disposal plastic suction pumps. They looked like small concertinas about 2" in dia. The thing to be watchfull or is that you don't contaminate the sample. |

I had to do the exact same task to get an oil sample with the Cat kit. They provide a very small plastic tube that fits down the dipstick tube. I used the Mityvac to lift the oil just up to the pump, pinched the hose, removed the Mityvac, placed the collection bottle on the ground (4 inches below the bottom of the pan) and waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. It literally took two hours to collect the three ounces in the collection bottle.
Cold oil flows very slowly especially with only a 4 inch head pressure. |

I just sucked all 2 gallons of engine oil from my engine with a hand-pump vacuum oil sucking device. The tube is small enough to fit all the way into the dipstick and touch the bottom of the pan. The whole process took about 4 minutes (including dumping the reservoir on the oil sucker because it only holds 1 gallon).
You could buy one of these handy little devices and suck as little or as much oil as you desire. All 2 gallons for a change, or a few ounces for an analysis, and be done in a matter of minutes. |

Thank you for help.
I tried once again with $1.99 siphon pump. I took quite a time, but I succeeded to get enough for oil analysis. This time I made three such cuts at the end: |
