engine serial #

I can't find the bloody engine serial # on a '80 300CD,
it seems there are two completely different rebuild kits for the vacuum pump. Can someone help me please?

Your engine number is at the top of the block toward the firewall under the injection pump. The repair kits are for either the diaphragm type (early) or the valve type (late).

It will be stamped into the engine block on the driver's side, just below the head. It can b real hard to read. Clean off he krud with soapy water or WD40 or something. It might be easier to rub it with a crayon over a piece of paper. Number should start with 6 1 7 9 5...........

Thanks, folks.
I have been having trouble with the VIN for parts as it is a Euro car. This should make life easier.
