Kick-Down

I posted this before but did not get a reply, so I'll try again.

My car is a '95 E300 Diesel. I can't get the Transmission to Kick-Down at speeds above 55mph. My kick-down works fine at lower speeds. Is that normal?

Does anybody's car kick-down at speeds above 55mph?

Thanks

Phil

As a temporary solution, you could simply downshift via the gear selector, to "3". That's the way I'd do it until I checked the kickdown switch connections(and switch).

How high is your diesel spooling(RPM's?) If the kickdown switch works, then it should be an even amount of RPM's each time you shift at full throttle.

EG, 5,000 RPM at 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th.

On the older cars and from my understanding the kickdown isn't supposed to kick down if the engine RPM is above 3000. I imagine at 55 you're above that speed.

May be completely wrong, especially as your car is quite a bit newer than mine.

See that last set of dots inbetween the kilometer/mph section of the speedometer? The three dots around 85 mph? That should be where your car shifts from third to fourth with kickdown engaged.

One pair of dots signifies a 2nd to 3rd maximum rpm shift,

a single dot equals a 1st to 2nd maximum rpm shift.

ALL MB's should be able to wind up to those points WITHOUT the aid of the shift selector. If not, you need to make the necessary adjustments to the transmission which can be found using the search feature on this site.
